Heading to Myrtle Beach July 4th to the 10th. Any suggestions on fishing? I have been beach fishing on my vacations. It is fun. I catch mainly Whiting but have caught sharks, trout, sea bass, sheepshead puffers, lay fish, pompano, etc..just get up early and be done fishing by lunch when the beach fills up. Piers and bridges are fun but can be more crowded than I prefer. My boy helped land a 40 inch red a few yrs ago. That was fun

When we went to Navarre I took my Walmart special river spinning rod and one smaller spinning setup. The river rod has 50 lb test on it and the smaller rig had 8 lb test. Got some bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and a small shark. I had something else, maybe a cobia, get under the pier and break me off. I don't think Myrtle Beach allows you to purposefully try to catch shark. Had most of my bites and catches on a gotcha plug or cigar minnows.

duff Whats a good set up? Would we be better to buy one up here or wait until we get down there? I have done both. Depends on travel arrangements. If flying you are limited on what you can bring without extra fees. A small medium action rod and reel can get you most fish. Jigs, spoons, top water bait if going for artificial. Don't look past the 1st trough between the beech and 1st sandbar. Look for where water rushes out or in and fish there. It takes some effort but once you can pick it out you have it figured out. If you plan to do more beech vacations I would use this trip as a recon trip and figure out what you want to go after. I use 8 to 9 foot surf rods and a 2500 or 4500 spinning reel. Diawa BG 4500 is my favorite. Spool with decent braid. Leader material depends on what I am trying to catch but 20 to 80 pound test. Hooks all circle hooks 1/0 to 10/0. Only reason for steel leaders if going for shark. Florida has a special training you have to take to shore fish where you target shark. Lead is important. It can be heavy current. Use something that will stick. Pyramid, no rolls or they have special weights with wire to lock it into the sand. I never used those. In light current egg sinkers will work but they will wash up in a moderate surf. I like eggs when casting down stream off the pier. It keeps the bait down. Bait is frozen shrimp to get bait and then cut bait after that. If there are sand fleas on the beach those are as good as they get. Easy to dig and everything eats them. Watch YouTube to figure out how to find and catch. I don't need any special tools but those do make it much easier. The sharks and ray were caught in the surf off cut bait. Everything eats cut bait. The red was off the pier off a live white bait, like a shad. Only way my kids fish with me is on the beach so they can leave when bored...jerkwads.

duff Whats a good set up? Would we be better to buy one up here or wait until we get down there? I have fished on fishing piers that will rent/sell anything you need to fish on the pier....just another option! Try to fish on high tides your results will be better also.

Definitely if you are able to pick your times. Moving water is ideal. If you are capable of a fish dinner keep some fish. Those Whiting are delish. Everything fits hard and tastes good. I am not sure lady fish are good to eat but they make great cut bait.

We just got back from Naples the last week of March. I think we fished a beach/bridge/pier every day we were there. If you take your own stuff (that's what we do) t's best to have a salt water reel, doesn't have to be expensive, but will be well worth your money. One day in the salt will have a freshwater reel come to a grinding halt. Sometimes a real good flushing will free it up, other times its the trash can. We also take an aerator bucket for live shrimp. Duff is right, sand fleas work good too, especially for sheephead. We seem to do better with smaller hooks, less bite-offs.

That was the only one any of us caught the whole trip, I was happy for my youngest daughter! It was also probably the biggest "pier" fish we caught. Seems like those ocean fish fight a whole lot harder than a freshwater fish.

Well I'm old enough to remember when everyone on the left blamed all the violence in America on President Trump. 😊

I heard it's a bad idea to lip a bluefish like a Largemouth Bass....... Ummm.....filleting one I got my finger to close to mouth and that dude clamped down. Took some pliers to pry open mouth. Bled like a stuck hog. Teeth are incredibly sharp.
