Got couple clover plots mowed that had some early weeds growing, will follow-up with spray in couple weeks. Mapped out 2021 plot plans adding 3-4 acres corn, couple new clover plots, 1 buckwheat and one new sunflower mix plot. Bought fertilizer and lime for secluded and new plots I'll get spread once new plots tilled others I will spread next week. Already have seen bucks with new antler growth noticeable. 2021 may just be our best year yet , finding 60 ish or so sheds on mine and 2 neighbors little mgt. area (460 acres). Build it and they will come.

Topped my clover with 6-24-24. I really enjoy messing with plots. Will also mow this week. Wait a week then spray with clethodim. I mow 1-2 more times then interseed chicory and oats early august right before a rain.

I do soil tests, lime/fertilize accordingly, rototill the plots, etc. but I think the planting process is what is biting me in the butt. That and lack of rain......

For small plots I hand seed, larger I use Brillion seeder. I have a corn planter as well but rent the Brillion from County ext office. Not had any problems with hand seeding though. Normal process is disk, apply fert. and lime as needed then rototill , follow that with cultipacer to firm seedbed, then broadcast seed, then cultipac again. (Important to have rain within few days seeding).

I have a 24"x60" "lawn roller" to firm the seed bed, might have to look into a real cultipacker? I can get a Brillion from the county or a local rental place, don't have a small corn seeder though. 20 hp and 65 hp 4wd tractors are at my disposal. All my plots are small, max 2 acres.

Clover likes a lower ph in the high 5’s or low 6’s. Wouldn’t put much lime on clover

My clover plots generally last 5-6 years and because they produce nitrogen I like to follow the larger ones with corn or soybeans for year. (Great results). Smaller plots I will reseed late summer to a turnip mix, oats or buckwheat then reseed back to clover following spring. My area has very little AG crops SO try to offer as many food sources as possible. Clover and alfalfa mixes make up biggest part and I am a hay producer to generate revenue to support my whitetail addiction... Lol.
