Not sure when this adventure started but I'll place a bet on "I froze my butt off" being somewhere in the mix.

Maybe they heard BANJO music coming from inside the woods. Reminds me of a story about HNF, banjos and Span's old man. He invited me to deer hunt the Hoosier and I took up the offer. We drove down late evening and got in the area maybe 7pm. It was dark but we went to a local joint in Norman Indiana. Walking up I could here banjos playing inside. We walk in and get a few strange looks but there was an open table so we sat down and enjoyed the music. I was in-between kinda intimidated and enjoying the time when someone let us know it was a private party and we were not invited. Explained alot. I am really surprised that Art wasn't able to convince them to let us stay, eat for free and secure some private hot spot to hunt the next day. He was a smooth individual. Not sure why Shane missed that trait but he is rougher than a drt trisket. We hunted Deam that weekend with 0 luck. Art nearly got gunned down by a squirrel hunter and I saw some turkey. Being from Madison Co we never saw turkey except at the grocery store. I think it was the next season when they had fall tags available.

Sorry guys. Been out killing turkeys.
Man this is going to be a long story.
So we get to our designated launch sight that I chose. Apparently I'm not A. a good judge of launch sights and B. not a good judge of distance across water. In my defense it was 100 yards to the other shore just not to where the campsite was. Mind you I was told that instead of kayaks, my buddy was bringing his canoe so we could take everything I wanted. Apparently also I take stuff like that literally. Anyway, didn't know if anyone knew but there was a storm blowing in Tuesday night and usually with that comes high winds. Anyway the first trip across out of three to the campsite that was 800 yards away was more, let's say, a refresher on my paddling abilities. Also the wind WILL change direction and blow against you no matter what direction you are paddling. An overloaded canoe rocks real nice in high wind too. Me being a bit of a dumb *** just could not stop laughing the whole time. I live my life by zero stress and let nothing bother me so I can see humor in anything. Anyway, I digress. Took three trips to get everything across. Find a nice campsite and set everything up. Take a bit of a walk and find a better campsite about 400 yards away. Convince him need to camp there so we move everything. HNF suggests setting up camp at established campsites with fire rings already there. Let me inform you and HNF that there are fire rings every 50 yards throughout the whole wilderness area. Should have been a hint that maybe hiking and camping and hunting pressure may be a bit higher than anticipated. BTW, not sure anyone was aware but it was predicted snow for Tuesday night. Also trail maintenance was being done right next to where we camped. Set up my battery powered blow up mattress and sleeping bag and decided to hit the bed. It was early but I was beat. Tossed and turned and finally went to sleep...to be woken up by a helicopter flying over just above tree top height. Thought we had a RED DAWN situation going on but pretty sure it was HNF just tidying up after trail maintenance. Got back to sleep and buddy wakes me up and says, I hear people talking. After being assured it wasn't russian, told him it had to be HNF personnel. After a long night of snow and rain we wake up to misery. Also looking into the lake we can see three other campfires. Got dressed and proceeded to walk. Yes walk because there isn't a turkey within 6 miles of where we camped. Snow on the ground and not a single track to be found. Not a single gobble. Not a single feather. I saw more eagles than I heard gobbles in three days and I seen 2 eagles. Now I believe that the copter I heard was HNF, but what they were doing is a mystery. We did find numerous little black parachutes so your guess is as good as mine but there ain't a turkey to be found no where. There should be turkey. The most turkey area I've ever seen. No turkeys. Found out later my buddy actually camped about a mile from me. He said the same. Neat area though. Did find two nice coleman coolers two miles from anywhere or any trail back in the woods. After getting the courage up to look inside them (seen too many movies ie. what's in the box) we found a sixer of white claws. Neat area with a lot of history but zero birds. Packed up on Thursday night and took the canoe back three trips and had wife pick us up. Hunted 15 minutes from the house on Friday and had 6 gobblers in shooting range by 1, closest was 15 feet but couldn't get a shot on him, killed mine and actually left gobbling birds because I was hungry. They just would not shut up. Watched two longbeards throw down in knock out drag out fight. Went back Saturday and called in another 5 and buddy shot his. Believe it was one that got in a fight because he had one heck a puncture wound to his breast. Left the area with birds still gobbling. Did I say this was 15 minutes from the house and woke up in a warm soft bed each morning. Anything else ya all want to know on why to not ever listen to me when I have a "good idea"?

And to make up for whatever happened that night, I wasn't there, every Friday they had steak night and the owner would but two of the biggest porterhouses to the side and save them for me and dad when we came in. I'm talking the whole plate covered and had a second plate for sides. I remember one night we were there and one of the waitresses was younger, maybe 21. Good looking gal. Anyway she's talking to us at the table and looks at me and asks, you ever been horseback riding nude? Nope. Well it's fun. Ma'am, you have my attention.

Also, forgot to add. Ran into duff at walmart monday night with my two shopping carts full of crap. He was with his wife. Nicest lady and also used to work for the forestry and walked more of that property than the local deer. Will add she is WAY above ryan's pay grade. Anyways she tells me, I feel that area gets flooded with hikers and hunters. Yeah, whatever lady. What do you know.🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦

Why else would I be grocery shopping? As we walked away she admitted that Shane must be one of the toughest guys in LawCo. Because that was one of the dumbest ideas... I told her she had no idea as that was one of his better ideas.

Learned next year we need a bigger boat, bigger tent, cots, and a more secluded place that no one else will think of going. Just crazy to think that I'd hunt ten minutes from my house on a property that holds an insane amount of birds and sees zero pressure. Also I'm taking a ten day trip to Tennessee and kentucky next year completely in the dark. What is the absolute worse that can go wrong
