Not 100% sure how I roped myself into this and cam guarantee you that I'll post complaining about it but...
Have a buddy that comes down every year to turkey hunt. We hunt exclusively public land and always (usually) send him back with a bird. This year the only time he can get off work is the first 5 days of the season. Now usually we hunt the last week as I prefer it with less hunters and less competition from hens. Somehow I got the idea that he should bring his kayaks down and we'll hunt the wilderness area around monroe. Also for some ungodly reason I suggested that we could camp out from the kayaks for a couple of the days so we don't have to make the 30 minute drive and all the work to launch and all that. Usually my hunt camping requires a holiday inn with a hot tub. Did the roughing it hunting as a youngster and had my fill of it. Tent, you ask? No. He has hammocks with rain tarps and big tarps. There isn't even going to be air conditioning or cable tv involved. Not sure this even sounds like a vacation. Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one to come up with this idea but I just can't believe that too many people are going to go through this hassle. What ya all think? We going to get away from the crowds or still be elbow to elbow?

Seems like a lot of trouble to me, but I don't "hunt" turkey in the traditional manner.
I have a 40+ acre crop field behind my house that the property owner doesn't allow anyone to hunt on it. And every season, I see a couple of toms out there strutting around.
So I open either my kitchen or bedroom window, call to the turkey, get 'em in close, point my finger, say bang and close the window.
All done...

I've thought about camping in that area and hunting from my kayak but haven't put the two of them together. I don't have a net, rain cover, or quilt for my hammock though.

I'm not familiar with that area whatsoever so I can not speak on behalf of you beating any crowds. I hope you have an amazing adventure and please update us throughout.

Was just talking to my son last night about getting a smaller boat to hunt around different areas of Monroe. We hunt there anyway but don’t get too close to the water and don’t really think running the ski boat up on shore to hunt is a good idea. I think you’ll have plenty of woods to yourselves.

I hiked in by Patton Cave a few years back, slept in the backpack tent and hunted that area on opening morning. Saw sign and heard gobbles, but all I called in was two other hunters.

I have backpack hammocks just like that. We took the scouts flat water canoeing and camped there. I've thought about the same thing, have all the gear to go, and might just this year if plan A doesn't work out. I'm off work the first 5 days of season so I'll be watching to see how your adventures go.

Let me know how many mosquitoes also go camping with you. I did not think about skeeters but ticks popped up in my mind. My Thermocell does a good job on mosquitoes but nothing for ticks. Permethrin takes care of most ticks but I know just as I was dropping off to sleep I would feel something crawling.
