I’ve migrated a little bit north to Kokomo from my usual Indianapolis. I’ve been wanting to try salmon fishing. Yes I do know it’s a bit of a drive, but 2hrs up north is better than the usual 3.5 early in the morning. I’ve got quality bass fishing rods and bait casters and some medium heavy spinning rods. I’m squared away with my license and trout/salmon stamp. I guess my question is, what kind of tackle do you all recommend, and would my current rods and reels be alright? Also just a side note I use 50-60lb braid on my reels

15-20 years ago I tried exactly that and while I caught a few fish, I lost a LOT more that I had hooked. I ended up buying a rod with a very soft tip but with some backbone, 2 piece, 9' IIRC. That soft tip on the rod seemed to minimize the hooks pulling out when they shook their heads. Use 8#-12# Fluorocarbon leaders. As for what terminal tackle to use, it all depends on what is hot that week, and if you are fishing creeks, rivers or L. Michigan.

I knew my ears were ringing more than usual.
I am no pro! We fish for fun. We are shore fisherman, so get to see a lot of guys setups. Anything in medium action 7-10' will do. We use 10 or 12# monofilament. I dont think we have ever had one break the line, but not catching 25# either. The fish in the creeks dont fight like the ones in open water. We do break off due to snags tho.
My advice is to check the dnr website fishing report. Concentrate on the major runs to get the most out of your time. The steelhead run is right now and the best I have ever seen.
Currently, Central Park in Mishawaka on the St Joe river is exceptional. The steelhead are spawning on rock and sand flats. Bobber with a bead or single egg tickling the bottom is the hot setup right now. In Trail Creek, we have been using Mepps inline spinners and caught a few fish.
Feel free to pm with any questions, or if you want to take a trip, we could meet and show you some spots and fish. Again, no pros here, just out to have a fun time and make memories with my boy.

Find yourself a reputable Charter Boat and book a day of fishing for yourself and a small crew. A good captain can put you on fish enough to fill your freezer with a years supply. The last few years myself and Schall53 have fished with a charter out of Ludington, Michigan we came home from each trip with great memories and more fish than we could eat. When you figure the time and cost you will invest in trying to catch a few fish from shore you will realize how good the idea is to book a charter. There is nothing more exciting then to be miles off shore with about 150 yards of line out in 250 feet of water and a 25 pound class King Salmon locks on to your lure....you will never forget that fight.

A great morning of fishing. Very cool who does the cleaning? You or the charter crew? I clean fish but if I'm paying i would like there to be a fish cleaning service for a respectable fee. I LOVE me some red snapper and love catching it but usually when I charter a boat I'm somewhere new and I don't really eant to deal with it.

The boat we charter is a one man crew that being the owner. The captain does the filleting we do the packaging, it's done right there behind that bragging board. The captain/owner is also the owner of "YECK" lure company which manufactures some of the most popular baits used by fisherman.

Update. I went with a buddy of mine up by Michigan city yesterday and we had a great day! Caught 12 coho and 3 lake trout, we let a few of the bigger ones go cause why not haha. Did end up with 3 5lb cohos though and that was pretty nice the average was about 3lbs though. The lake trout were around 6-8lbs

DETAILS. my buddy has his own boat and gear and called me up and was like let’s go! Apparently we’re gonna start doing this more and more once college is out for the summer haha. The waves were up to 5ft at times. we were fishing when the storm decided to cut up north. the fish gave us zero downtime, we just couldn’t keep a line in the water
