I found a treasure!
I acquired a "non-functional" rifle the other day. It was covered in rust, inside and out, but the price was right.
Now comes the interesting part. The "sales tag" read "Hartford Arms", but no-one could find any markings on the gun itself, and no serial number. It was assumed to have been manufactured before such information was required, and since it was "non-functional"...
Well, I brought it home and began to drown it in brake parts cleaner and penetrating oil. To my surprise it took only about 3-4 hour and all of the moving parts were doing just that again! The firing pin now moves freely again, but will not retract after firing, so I assume there is a broken spring there.
The rifle is a single-shot, falling block, with a 24" HEAVY octagon barrel. A plunk test tells me it's a .32cal, and it appears to be a rim-fire, so it weren't made last week...
I have a friend who just happens to be a trained gunsmith, and he teaches machining at our local university. He has agreed to do a chamber cast for me to determine the actual bore diameter, and I would be willing to bet he could repair the broken firing pin spring.
The bore is very dark, but still has strong rifling. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to restore it to firing condition, but that would just be a shame, not a tragedy.
I've tried, very hard, to research this rifle. The only mention I can even find says something to the effect that Hartford Arms Co. made a rifle, but you don't need to worry about that, because you're not likely to run into one...
BTW- that "right price" I spoke of was FREE!

With a lot of elbow grease, brake parts cleaner, and penetrating oil, I actually found some markings. There is a quite clear but incredibly light stamp on the top flat of the barrel that reads,
Hartford Arms Co.' Rifle
The only other mark I can find is on the left side flat of the barrel. The first line of this stamp reads, Biscorp or Biscohp. The second line appears to read, BRE/L*L. I can't make out the letter or symbol between the 2 L's.
So I do indeed have a Hartford Arms rifle. I'd still like to be able to find out much more about this piece.

Google "electrolysis rust removal" and look at the you tube videos.

Nice find. Some of those early rifles had a firing pin you you could flip for centerfire. The early took a heel bullet like a .22 uses. A quick Google search showed Hartford Arms as a company that Hi Standard bought. It also showed some Hartford Arms marked Cresent Arms double barreled shotguns.

You want to do it right, get a 4” piece of pvc,cap both ends then cut a long hole so you can lay the barrel in a bath of Evaporust or equivalent. Walmart and menards carry the stuff, bout $20 a gallon. You’ll think it ain’t doing nothing but leave it soak a few days and you’ll think someone polished it, it removes no base metal, just rust.Amazing stuff.

My father in law gave me like 50 old guns before he passed. A lot of ww2 rifles , few 22s, one big bore rifle-Winchester 375 HH Mag pre 64, few shotguns over under and 4 old colt pistols and I’ve used that evaporust on some of them that looked like old rusty water pipes and it just works amazingly.

I'll have to try the electrolysis on some meaningless object. I have washing soda on hand, a brand new battery charger, clamps...I even have a piece or two of 1" rebar out in the junk pile.
Now to find a test piece and a suitable vessel.
