The little buggers look really cool and I kinda want to catch some. Are they a northern thing or can I find some down towards the river end of the state? Any special secrets or does normal panfish techniques do the job?

Monroe has them. They eat minnows, worms, jigs usually at or close to bottom. Usually not very big.
Summit Lake used to be my go to spot for perch through the ice. Had to be cold for a good bit to get out by the dam. I would luck into a few bluegill or crappie fishing from a boat too.

I am well insulated but just can't convince myself to sit on ice to try to catch a few fish.

My boy wants to go ice fishing, but I am not equipped at all, and dont want to risk it. Now is the time to go, finally safe ice, just follow the others. But we will just have to wait for open water again.

Be careful what you call a perch, there is a fish from the ASIA that is goes by the name of YELLOW LAKE PERCH and it even looks like a YELLOW LAKE PERCH however its about 4 times + the size of a true YELLOW LAKE PERCH so they cut them up into small portions it looks like your eating a true YELLOW LAKE PERCH but your not. Because they call it a YELLOW LAKE PERCH in ASIA restaurants can sell it by that name however it's not a true YELLOW LAKE PERCH "I" STREET MEATS has this fish it's known as a "ZANDER" perch, they are about 1/4 the price of a true YELLOW LAKE PERCH.

Zander, walleye and perch are in the same family, Percidae. Zander and walleye are in the same genus Sander.

The IGFA All-Tackle world record zander was caught in Lago Maggiore, Switzerland in June 2016 weighing 11.48 kg (25.3 lb).[11] Zander reach an average length of 40–80 cm (15.5–31.5 in) with a maximum length of 120 cm (47 in).

It's illegal to import Zander (alive) into the USA. There is a lake in Colorado that has Yellow Perch up to 20"..... Nobody knows the genetic history of those fish. Even the local old timers just say that they have been in that lake forever and they don't know who stocked them. I am trying to get some fish from there to use as brood stock.

I did it in18 hours straight one year, won't do that again.....
