We are looking to do a DIY elk hunt in Colorado this year, probably the 3rd rifle season, is anyone willing to share some tips or suggestions on otc units or units That can draw with no preference points The quickest way to check for numbers, success rates and draw info (for those units) is the CPW website under "hunting statistics". The hunting almanac also has a ton of info and you can call CPW and talk to a Hunt Planner for free.

I don't really have much to offer in the way of help, other than to suggest that you look into units that you can draw with zero points. Some you can even draw 2nd choice, so you can obtain a point still get a tag.
There are hunts during muzzleloader season (rut), and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rifle. Some of these MIGHT get you into areas with less pressure than the OTC units.

Colorado has quite a few areas where you can simply buy over the counter elk tags. Had a successful hunt in the Grand Mesa not to far out of Collbran a few years ago.

That area was absolutely crawling with OTC archery guys last year. I was there on a bear hunt last year but did manage to see more elk than bears.

Think we decided on a unit...gonna try to draw unit 31 for first rifle, sounding like the terrain is rougher but less hunters! We will see

Here's what it looks like just south of DeBeque. Not really elk country. I heard there's a big ranch in 31 that controls of lot of the North end of the unit and will gate roads so access may be an issue.
