Hopefully the ice will still be safe tomorrow when I go out. Ice fishing Sunday, open water here on Wednesday. Pretty typical for Ohio co. Get a couple days and ya gotta act fast.

BUDD: are you fishing for these for the meat if so how do you prepare them and what do they taste like? We take the loins and from the ribs back along the tail. We cut into nugget size, boil for 6 minutes, dip in garlicbutter.

Drove 2 hours to fish with a client on his pond. Temps weren't too bad, 38°F and dropping to the upper 20's right before dark. About 5" of ice on the pond, that had about 3" of half frozen ice on top of that. Spent about 3.5 hours fishing, caught some Bluegill, some Hybrid Bluegill and some Yellow Perch. Tossed back the bigger Perch, kept the ones between 10" and 11" long (6 in total). Kept close to 50 Bluegills. Northern Bluegills. No idea of the weight, will weigh them in the morning, my butt is dragging, and I'm going to bed shortly. Top fish is a male, bottom is a female. Hybrid Bluegill. This one weighed 0.89#. This one was spawned in the pond, we tossed back the larger ones (those were bigger than a pound). I will post pictures of some of the Yellow Perch tomorrow.

The trip to that pond was cancelled for tomorrow, he's got to do some farm work and with the rain we both think that the ice on Sunday would be too iffy. I am going to try my pond tomorrow if the ice is safe. Here's a picture of some of the Yellow Perch we kept. We tossed the bigger ones back, they were females full of eggs. The rule is anything 11" and under comes out. With the Hybrid Bluegills, the rule is anything under 10" comes out. The one that is on the ruler is a male so that was OK to remove even though it was a wee bit over 11". These averaged 3/4 lb each.
