Featherduster (I don't know how to "copy and Paste" your reply yet, still learning) - it was the mid to late 80's when I was fortunate enough to hunt there, maybe went 12-15 times over a span of 2 to 3 years. Didn't really know that it was sold to the state. I have to guess that you had some good shooting on your club. There was another place that was just east of SR 39 owned by a farmer named Solmos (sp?). we would even sit in the parking lot of the preserve on SR 39 and watch ducks come in to that place and get whacked. Too bad they don't seem to draw the birds that they once did. I think its been around 3 or 4 years since I can say that we have had any "northern" birds in any real numbers on any of the places I hunt here in Marshall County. But when they would show up, there would just be 80-100 birds on a pond that weren't there the day before. Maybe they're wise to you now. Click the button that says "Quote" at the top right of his post. Thanks jman46151!!

marshallco: Art Gumz never owned the land the duck club was on so when the owner of the land ( a women ) from Florida died the land went up for sale. Bob Solomos the farmer who owned the farm/duck club across the street from the refuge bought that farm then 2 years later he sold it to the state of Indiana. Bob Solomos died about 15 years ago and his farm was sold to a businessman from North Judson who sold it again but retains the hunting rights on that farm and it still is a duck club. This club is the only club that still gets some shooting. , never knew any of that. I was just a snot nose kid happy to be able to shoot some ducks. I never knew an Art Gumz, only Jerry and his son Kevin. I would believe that the old Solmos place still has some action, it seemed to be the place to be back in the day.

My duck decoys havnt been wet in 3 years. Wood ducks were the ones we mostly saw. We even got houses out for them. Clean them every year but usually never used. We have more owls using them than ducks.

We have more owls using them than ducks. Iβve found that I need a good duck sit every now and then just to keep me sane and change things up a bit, even if I donβt shoot anything. EVERY year I vow to spend more time with ducks, cause Iβm always disgusted that at the end of the season Iβve only sat a handful of times. This year our water was basically gone, and now things are freezing up even if there were any birds. If I could only shoot a 250β non-typical in early October Iβd be all set to be on the water the rest of the fall/winter. A little pond water will clean off those decoys, go enjoy a sit before season is over!

No pictures today. By the time I went past there they were gone. I did talk to a buddy that hunted there this morning, they got 1 duck and said they didn't know what the heck they were. His quote "Brant maybe?". "didn't sound like any goose I know, light colored bodies, about the size of a small Canada."
They went out in the kayak to get the duck and they could only get to within about 200 yds of the flock then they'd start swimming away.

Snows are small. Specs are small but not white. We do get white pelicans that migrate through but they are big and mostly quiet.

I would just about bet my retirement they are not Brant.
Brant are a coastal salt water goose, dark in color.

I drove past 30 & 39 and 8 & 39 today... A LARGE raft of ducks in the SW corner of the gravel pit, they were doing circles to keep the water open, an area maybe 50 yds x 75 yds.
At 8&30, nothing at first but as I drove S, there were ducks and geese in the open water to the S of the tall grass where the blinds were on the E side. I'd say a few hundred geese and more ducks than that. Again, swimming to keep the water open. One group was RIGHT in front of one of the blinds. This was 1:30 PM CST.

The only thing flying at the Kank is those stupid sandhills. You ever hunted Jasper Pulaski? It is impossible to even hear for 2 hours in the morning and evening because those stupid things are so loud. Wish they would open a season on them, but I doubt that will ever happen here.

I am not sure why? The whoppers pass through KY and they opened Sandhills there.

I hope I'm wrong and they do eventually open a season here, but the things I've been seeing lately with the way the DNR goes about things... I'm not holding my breath. Seems like things that are logical and make sense never happen while other ideas that don't make any sense are pushed through without thought.

Eventually there will be a season is my guess.
