I notice that a bunch of you guys do a fair bit of smoking... I’ve never smoked a turkey before but was wanting to try to smoke one for thanksgiving for something new. I have smoked a few different things in my electric smoker, but overall I’d say I’m still a little green on experience. Anyone have a tried and true recipe they’d be willing to share?
I’m assuming I’ll need to do some sort of brine and other prep work. Any other advice would be appreciated as well.
Thanks! Scott

I did one last thanksgiving for the first time and it turned out great. Everyone loved it. It was gone before the oven cooked one was. I did nothing special to it at all. No brine. Threw on some seasonings and put it in the smoker. No liquid in the pan either. It was super moist when it came out. I’ve got another one to smoke now, but with it being only the four of us this thanksgiving, I’m gonna save it for later on.

Before smoking mine, I brine it. Ive also started spatchcocking it. Thats where you take the backbone out and break the breast bone so it lays flat. Even cooking and cuts the cooking time down drastically.

I watch Tim Farmer with Kentucky Afield and so on. He and his wife has a great cooking show. I get the plus benefits from all three states. Worked in all three.

My oldest brother use to do a couple every year on a weber grill, the skin looked dark and dry but the meat was tender and juicy. It was always a hit on the holidays

I've decided to say NO to having turkey just because we are supposed to. I'll be putting a brisket in the smoker at 5:00 a.m. Thursday and having it for dinner with several non-traditional sides.
It will just be the four of us. My dad had yet another bout with kidney stones and a UTI. They have decided to stay home and heal. I'll probably thin slice the leftover brisket, put it in a crock pot with bbq sauce, and take it to them Friday or Saturday.

If you've never experienced kidney stones yourself, you dont know what your missing! I will say a few good words for him, as they are about the most painful thing you can go thru. Hope he heals up quickly. Happy Turkey Day!

Done a bunch of over the years I don’t brine I know some guys do I prefer to do it like this I defrost turkey cover with mayo or you could use salad dressing I prefer mayo forms a nice brown crust keeps it from drying out after covering with mayo flavor it with your favorite seasoning honestly it’s hard to beat Lawrays if your cooking for the masses not to overpowering as some seasonings can be I smoke at lower temp for some time with fruit wood smoke I prefer fruit over hickory or other hardwood for chickens turkeys and pork than back off smoke and increase heat to complete cooking Rest meat for 10 15 minutes than serve I’ll use either beer or apple juice instead of water

I've been deep frying for years, but going to try smoking one after Christmas for the New Year. Either use my smoker or try Tim Famers way. I like the idea.

Just got around to watching this. This is exactly the way my Orion smoker cooks birds. I haven’t done a turkey yet, but may have to try now. It will cook up to a 20 pound bird in and hour and fifteen minutes.

He has done everything the doctors have told him to do and still has a bout 1-2 times every year. If anyone has had a similar condition and knows a solution that actually works, please let me know. He cut out tea, salt, has never drank booze, etc. and drinks all of the water he can stomach. I can't begin to list the Rx meds he has tried.

I have given up, trying to give up certain things. I am not quitting red meat, or beer, or broccoli, etc. My doc is awesome, and just keeps me stocked up now to deal with them when they hit. Good luck to him.

Doesn't drinking lemon juice supposed to help?

Doesn't drinking lemon juice supposed to help? Supposed to, as well as apple cider vinegar.
