I got the deer back from the processor that I had shot with the .450 BM at the Park. The deer was 40 yds or under when I shot it, it only went about 20 yds. Bullet entered behind the ribs on the left side, ending up under the shoulder blade on the opposite side. I was surprised that it didn't exit at such a close shot. Factory Hornady Black ammo, 250g Flex Tip.
Bullet weighs 190.5 grains now. Perfect mushroom.

I am still shooting the older 250gr Hornady loads and mine never exit either. The deer just drop though! I am using a Bushmaster AR with a 16" barrel. Next year I am going to try some of the 275 gr Barnes bullets in this gun. The performance is supposed to be nasty!

I'll have to look up the specs on those. If the MV is the same, I'd expect them to perform very similar to the 250 FTX bullets. I don't know if the extra 25 grains would have gotten an exit shot on this deer if the fps was the same.

The 450 is basically a 460 S&W with a rimless case. My 460 never exited the deer. The bullet either mushroomed or exploded. Now the 454 casull would go all the way thru but its going slower and bullet held together better. Idk why.

My shot was near 150yd this morning. 450bm, Hornady Black. 250gr ftx. Sharp quartering away, entrance was behind last rib, exited out far shoulder. Exit hole looks same size as entrance. Gonna hang up and gut shortly. Will get a few pics. Trying to dry out and warm up first. Got no bone going in, guts and lung, then caliber size hole out. Still did a spectacular job without much expansion. Mine was a really good blood Trail, zero complaints here.

I looked at building a 450 BM but I didn't like the ballistics on it. Loses too much energy quickly. My 12 gauge has better ballistics and energy at 150 yards. I'll stick with my 12 gauge that puts 2" groups at 150 yards.

I strictly use mine for public land hunts - state park hunts and now with all the invasives that have grown up there is no shot more than 100 yds.

With no ag on public land, I don’t see myself doing any sort of long shots out there. I would like a compact woods gun for my private spots too, and I think that’s where my want for a hunting ar is coming from. I could probably just use granddaddies 30/30 carbine and achieve what I’m looking for, but with less pizazz. Lol At the same time ... I’ve never missed an opportunity on a deer solely because my bolt gun is “too long”. I do know a smaller weapon would be easier to handle off hand. The last two deer I shot were with my 7mm mag and for both deer I was turned around in my climber seat shooting off hand..... definitely would be easier in the woods with a more manageable firearm. From here on out this season , I’ll have the ol mossberg off brand 12 gauge with rifle sights in hand if I’m not on a field. Gotta score one for papaw.
