Yesterday we were discussing which location to sit due to the forecasted North to N.E. wind on Saturday morning. We basically had 3 options. The one we ended up choosing was a ground blind on a small property with several neighbor's homes close by.
Her and I had put the blind up 2 weeks ago after the property owner contacted my wife. She reported seeing a fight out of her kitchen window between what she described as a huge buck, and a smaller opponent.
We arrived at the place and were settled into the blind slightly after 6:00am. We sat in the dark for roughly an hour. Checking clearance for the crossbow and quietly discussing shooting lanes that would appear as dawn began to break. Then, going over each sapling that could pose a risk to arrow flight. By 7:30 she had practice aimed to each potential shooting position.
Then, the sleepy time hit her really hard. I was watching her try to fight the slumber her mind desired. It made me chuckle inside!
I let her nap for a few minutes as I kept an eye out for movement. About 9:15 I realized there was a lane for her from 22-30 yards that neither of us had noticed. She would have to slide off of her chair and shoot from a kneeling position to get there. So, she went through the motions of taking aim on an imaginative deer in that spot. After returning to her seat, I made an adjustment to my seating position and leaned forward. Looking to our left in her blind spot I see a dandy of a buck heading our way and not gathering any dust.
I stammered to her to take aim where I had placed our scent wicks. She thought I was kidding until she saw it for herself. We got it stopped just 2 feet too late. As there was a sapling in the way of the vitals. She couldn't shoot!
So, I whispered to her to aim at the next opening in front of it. As it started moving into that opening she let out a loud bleat and the deer slammed on the breaks again. This time in the wide open at 18 yards.
The arrow found it's mark and the deer hit hyper-speed as it made a roughly 350 yard dash.
It was easy tracking the first 250 yards. But the last 100 had no spore to be found.
My wife and son helped her track. One staying with last blood while the other 2 did arcs out in front looking for more blood.
I drove the neighborhoods around the area and ended up talking to a gentleman whom had been cutting wood in the area. His son had seen the deer in their dry creek bed. Sure enough, there he laid. I asked the landowner if he'd go along with a story to fool my daughter.
So, I went back and told her I'd found a drop of blood by this guy's house I'd talked to. She had no idea I'd already seen it.
A great ending to a long story! The shot dead centered the liver and exited the opposite lung.
Now to see if my wife can connect yet this year. Take care all, and best of luck!
