When daylight broke this morning I realized someone has been trespassing on my private property. They entered my hunt shack and stole a small amount of hunting gear. The total value of missing gear is less than $200, but I'm as ed as can be ab out someone being on my property, AND in my shack. Now I am left wondering if someone isn't using MY property, and MY shack to hunt. No video surveillance was present at the time, but will be soon. Where do I go to report this? If I can identify the scumbag(s), I will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law!

The Sheriff's office will take a report.

I feel for you buddy. It's a pretty sick feeling to deal with s as such. We have called the local Sherriff and CO on a few trespassing/poaching occasions up in LaPorte in years past. Unfortunately, nothing came from those efforts. We tended to see the best outcome from "policing" the property ourselves. Making our presence known as much as possible! And teaming up with the upstanding neighbors to help us in our efforts.

I have great neighbors on 3 sides, and hope they stay here as long as I am here.

Unfortunately, I doubt the police can do much for you other than take a report. It's a break in with a loss of $200, and while I'm sure you are angry and feel violated, the police see it every day and likely lack the resources to truly investigate the crime.
If I were in your place, I'd ask the neighbors if they happened to see anything. I would also install a couple of game cameras in strategic places outside. That way if this happens again, you might be able to get pictures of the individual(s) involved and provide that to the police. Better door and window locks would be a good idea too.
Other than that, I really don't know what else you could do.

Wednesday I found that my double stand I put up in a creek bottom at a buddy's place to hunt with my kids was stolen. They left the bow hangers in the tree, but stole the double stand. I didn't think I would have to worry about a double stand being stolen. Luckily I wasn't planning on hunting there with them on Saturday.

Are you anywhere near Tippecanoe county?

At 62, I can still climb with the best of them, but have found myself nodding off now and again, and that's NOT a good thing when you're 15 feet in the air. Besides that, they're cold! I've dug myself a ground blind seat in the side of a hillside that I hunt here in Tippecanoe county, and I've constructed a nice little shoot-shack 4 feet off the ground at my Fountain county property, so I just don't use the stands anymore. I feel a whole lot safer too. You're welcome to them. Just PLEASE, don't let me hear about you falling out of one. I believe they both have safety rails for the front, but still...like the advertisements say, "Don't be a thud".

With a shooting rail slid in place, you can nap all day long and not fall out.

We still need to have on that full body safety harness attached to a safety life line so that we are safe from the ground up, while in the stand and all the way back down to the ground..

I have lifelines on all of my single seat stands, and I'm attached from the ground up. For the double stands, I clip in with a locking carabiner as soon as I get to the top. Shooting rails serve as a form of passive fall protection, but if something breaks and everything comes cashing down, it really doesn't matter. A buddy I graduated with fell from a tree stand a few years ago. He broke all of ribs on one side of his body and collapsed a lung. He didn't have a cell signal to call for help. He had to crawl to his ATV and ride to the county road where a county road crew happened to be working. They were able to radio for the ambulance. Channel 13 did a story on him. He's lucky to be alive. It's not worth it. Tieing off doesn't take any extra time and deer don't know the difference.

I have the lifelines with two prusiks on all my doubles, so each person is hooked in from start to finish. No way I’d let my son climb any treestand without being hooked in from the ground up.
