Friend of my dad has a 30-06 rifle that he wanted a muzzle brake put on. With a light hunting taper to it it was not possible. so I asked if just porting it would be ok. Which made for less work. To thread it I would have to remove the front sight and then relocate it after threading. The porting turned out great. Then I noticed the crown and WTF!!! So I re-crowned the barrel. He also said trigger was to light for hunting. I checked the pull and it was 8.5 ounces!!! Great for bench shooting but not for hunting. I was able to get it to 2 pounds. He didn't want it any heavier than 2 pounds.

What is it you gain by doing this?
Your craftsmanship looks very good also!

Looks nice. Do you believe the crown was damaged by a cleaning rod?

Porting... sorry should been more precise! It takes away the felt recoil. Makes a gun that isn't pleasant to shot , shootable. Which also helps take the flinch or jerk of the trigger less likely. The porting also helps keep the barrel down so you can keep on target better during and after the shot. It does however make the gun a lot louder.

Looks nice. Do you believe the crown was damaged by a cleaning rod? No I think someone tried to do their own crown job. You can see how off center it was.

Very nice work. Nothing more exciting than precision and accuracy.

Looks good!! Now to re-blue the crown. LOL 2 questions. Do you have to remove any burr on the inside of the barrel, and how many thou is the crown recessed? Its a 60° crown. As far as any burrs on the inside, what was there is very minimal. I use very expensive and sharp tooling that leaves almost none to deal with. I use a small hone to get rid of what is there and then a couple shots for testing. Never had any burrs left after that. Dull tooling will cause the metal to ball around the edges causing a lot of work to remove.
