I was worried about Covid impacting the herds around me hard with many having a ton of time at their disposal compared to normal years.....then the weather has been insanely mild.....we are back at reduction time frame level of harvest numbers. Not surprised, but I'm predicting this is going to infuriate some folks.

Looks like it might be heading for like the turkey harvest did this year. More folks with time.

My home county is still trending downward BUT herd needed to be reduced so I am not surprised nor unhappy about. I saw deer all but 3 sets and had several sets where I saw over 12 deer and several sets where I saw multiple bucks. I am happy with our lower bonus antlerless (2) tags available but would not be surprised if it is lowered to 1 or none next season. Interesting tid bit as I was speaking with another local (Very successful) trophy hunter over weekend, we are aware of 4 Boone and Crockett caliber bucks taken in our county this year... Can't recall that happening before..

Little quick observation, at the moment I checked (about 5 minutes ago) only 14 counties have a trend that is less than the previous year harvest. I didn't track them, but I know there were a few within like a dozen deer or so.
However 14 counties show trended decrease harvest, ALL are south of Indy and majority are down in the band of counties bordering the Ohio or counties just north of those that do. It is clear that IF there is any significant herd issues it would be down there. I think it is a mix of any of the following factors though leading to these lower numbers of harvested deer:
-Deer collectives or organizations which have been attempting to preach more trigger control. -EHD impacts upon the herd which can cause lower harvest numbers for two reasons; some folks seeing less deer, and others planning on no doe harvests coming out of EHD.

I would say you are correct as many counties along Ohio River basin were hit pretty hard last year with EHD.. Franklin Co. had some losses this year as well.

Here is a slightly more concerning take or observation as well. Many of those 14 counties are even presently beneath what they were back when state was still in the planned 5 year reduction mode statewide.

The fishing ramps have been packed all year too... with no walleye stocking and the wildlife getting hammered, Indiana outdoorsmen/women are in for some lean years. Hopefully, we have some balance in the lack of cars on the road, and deer collisions. Do they still report those numbers?

Clark, Scott, Jefferson and some further south took HEAVY EHD losses. It will take more than 1 season to rebound..

I remember when the season started someone on another site stated “I get the feeling we could see an all-time record kill this year.”...
Looks like we could diffidently be heading that direction!

Every season people fret over the numbers. They are either too low, or too high. I've debated this subject back and forth for years on these forums and yet the next year, the harvest numbers remain fairly steady.
I think the IDNR does a great job and figure that will continue. So barring a huge outbreak of EHD or CWD, there will be deer to hunt and memories to make next season.
IMO, the real threat to deer hunting isn't the number of deer, but the ever shrinking number of places to hunt deer.

For FREE yes!.... going quickly I agree that free is going quickly (and I don't blame the landowners who lease their ground), but it also includes the ever shrinking amount of habitat lost to development every year as well.

This isn't 100%, but typically the highest harvest totals happen when gun season is the earliest. When opening day falls on November 18th that's usually the lowest total and you can see an annual increase until the opening day us on November 12th.
