My friends dad is selling me his 14 ft boat. It’s on a trailor. He says he doesn’t have a title but has it registered. It has all the stickers it needs to be on the water. Will I need to get a title for the boat and/or trailor after buying it to be legal on the water? I can’t seem to sort through the info online. Any help is appreciated.

Youll need a title to register it for a motor you wont need one to just paddle around. Getg a title isnt really a big deal.

Thanks medic! So even though he doesn’t have one I can probably go to the bmv and apply for one? And do you know about the trailor? Is there anything special I need to do for it?

Should need at a minimum a bill of sale and possibly get a police inspection.

I know nothing about trailers. As mentioned above me, I would get a bill of sale, indiana has one online for boats that you cant print off. When I bought my boat I had the guy sign it just because it predates hull ID numbers. Which reminds me, I dont knoe this for sure but I think there was something about boat being valued under $500 that a title wasnt necessary, again, I cant be sure on that.

If you are gonna put a motor on it it doesn’t matter if it’s a 15$ 2x10 board gotta have a title

The guy had it for 20 years without a title because he bought it new. Back then, if the value was under (dont quote me) $1000 you did not need a title. I had him sign a bill of sale and away I went. The BMV had to look up the value on NADA and confirm that it was worth less than the $1000 back then and I had no issues.
