I use a modified Fyke net to sample fish in a pond. 2'x4' first hoop, transitioning to 2' dia hoops. The lead is 4' tall x 50' long.

I fished Lake Erie with a gentleman who has run hoop nets in one of Indiana's rivers for years. You should see the photos of the monsters he has caught.

I did while in college. We never caught any monsters but did ok on 10 pound and smaller. We were very inexperienced.
Depends on your intention on it but I didn't care for that kind of fishing. It is like work. If you are going to sell fish then I get it. I am sure you already know, you need a commercial fishing license to run a hoop net.

Used to do it When I was younger figured it would be fun to do again.

I did it for a while with my wife's grandpa. He used to do it a lot but as he got older he got out of it for a few years. He wanted to do it again and was doing it on his own but fell in the water so he asked me to help him. I thought it was fun and as duff said it's a good reason to be on the river.
