This is NOT intended to be a “virus” post, so please don’t take it there.
Two recent first-hand experiences of how the over-inflated unemployment payments are not doing society any good, at least not in my opinion:
We recently vacationed at a Gulf Coast resort for the fourth straight year. There is a very nice outdoor recreation area that has food and drink trucks nightly. Very good food at very reasonable prices. However, only two of the five food trucks were in operation. I asked the guy who seemed to be in charge what was going on. I’ll summarize his answer. All employees were laid off due to mandated restrictions. When they were finally permitted to open, most of the experienced employees refused to come back as they are receiving more in Gvt benefits than they normally make from working. The resort management is afraid to push back due to the threat of social medial backlash. Given the shortened season, it’s not worth trying to train new employees. So management decide to just keep some of the trucks idle for the season.
I have a co-worker that is a single mother. Her son was in his last year of HS and a very fine young man. School, work, girlfriend. That was his life. He excelled in welding at the local vocational-tech school and was invited to join the apprenticeship program at the local union once he received his diploma. He was also working at a local pizza joint. Bam...the $h!t hit the fan and school was dismissed early and the pizza place laid everyone off. He went from making part-time-pizza-cook wages to over $600/week. He could not start at the union hall since he did not have a diploma yet. He started a little drinking, smoking some weed, associating with the wrong crowd, etc. His mother could not be there to watch over him constantly and the father is a dead beat POS. Fast-forward three months and he is still collecting benefits, girlfriend is gone, won’t join the union because he is getting paid decent money to do nothing. Besides, he couldn’t pass a p!$$ test if he tried.
I recently read that the additional benefits are expiring in July. But, given recent statistics, I doubt that will happen.

I’ve heard if your job is open and you don’t go back your no longer able to receive benefits we have the same problem in Fort Wayne a lot of people are making more than they were working and they won’t go back to work until they get cut from benefits. I guess I can’t blame them I’d probably do the same if I could pull it off

And you're right, enough is enough. It's time people quit living on the government tit and get back to work.

There are definitely winners and losers in all this. The people that can work and refuse to are being exposed for what they are and that is a good thing, imo. It's been a windfall for me.

Does the employer call them? I don't know. If so that could whiz off the employee and he might not come back at all or if he does he will hold it against the employer forever. I understand that the Dems want to extend the $600 kicker until January. They are trying to buy votes and slow down the recovery.

As an employer yes you can call or on line you can also argue a claim They have something like a credit rating every time someone files it goes on your score We had a guy late for work his first day and then about every other day or two he got ask politely to go away he than put in for unemployment needless to say we argued and he never got it

I should of explained that better the more claims you have against you the higher your tax rate will be as an employer Just about like your credit score the worst it is the more you pay in interest

We were in upstate Michigan 2 weeks ago. It was like being there in mid September. No crowds lots of open seating in restaurants. The restrooms at the parks are screwed shut. Now they are about a week behind us but folks just are not heading up there. We saw several restaurants boarded up or with for sale signs. At my sister's in Petosky I spoke with my nephew. Their restaurant is at about 75% of last year but they have similar problems with experienced help preferring to stay home and get a govt check than take a loss and return to work.
I visited my sister in Illinois this past week. They can do outside dining and those were pretty much packed. I think more people are going to do staycations than a big trip. Uncertainty as to destination rules probably have more to do with this than any fears of the virus.

My daughter made more money not working than when she was working as well.....however she went back to work today...at a pay cut. I have no issue with helping those that need help AND are willing to help themselves. Open, free hand-outs are bad news and only perpetuate the problem. Our system is full of people like that and to be honest....we allow it to happen. Our society is being pushed to feel bad for people instead of supporting things like hard work. What I don't like seeing is these political games being played in the areas of public health and safety....open, don't re-open, protests, riots, de-fund the police....all mostly political actions aimed and getting or retaining political power more so than what is actually good for the country as a whole! Our government doesn't care about us.....we are just pawns in their game. They are career politicians only interested in retaining their perch on top....and they will do whatever it takes and step on whoever they have too to to stay there. Where our system started to fail was when the people started to fear the government!
