I grew up in Indy (suburbs and then nasty parts of the city once my parents divorced) and the only family "land" there was was my mom's parents in Michigan. They lived on 7ish acres in Warren (grandpa worked at the proving grounds) that had a seasonal pond, an orchard with apples and pears, and some "woods". When I was small there was actually still some farm land around them. As I got into HS and beyond developed swelled all around. Fast forward until I was about 28 and Grandma came to Indy because she had some "business" to take care of. Come to find out that my whole life she had 10 acres in Putnam County.....that had now just been sold Life goes on further and when she goes into a nursing home, grandpa moves in with my uncle and their property gets sold, again I didn't know anything about it. Never had a shot at either (and I might have been able to swing buying their homeplace). On the other side is what I had originally planned to do when I finished active duty. My wife is from outside Warsaw. I love the area, her family is great and we had wanted to buy just a small piece of land (5-20 acres) to build a house on, let alone hunt on. When time came to get off active duty the first time in '07 we started looking. Well that was a kick in the pills. Since the majority of land up there is still owned by branches of a relatively few amount of families there is an effective monopoly on land prices. They basically charge the same for all land, including "junk" land - the tillable acre price. Besides loving Colorado, this has made it effectively impossible for me to ever think about moving back. I hope the possibility of you getting a portion of the land works out. I am trying to get a place out here where it is still reasonable as I want to have a family "place" for the future.

JUST A THOUGHT: first come to an agreement with your siblings that when your parents decide they are moving you move onto the property and make a predetermined monthly or annual payment to them and you maintain the upkeep of the farm. OR: you could agree to live there rent free for X amount of years and your share when sold would be reduced by a certain amount. I know that the area your family farm is in is getting more and more valuable by the day especially to folks living in Chicago. Just look at the old Seven Springs/LaLumiere gun club property, that's just one mans money. OH NO!!!!!!! I agree with this. The land will only increase in value as time goes on. Do whatever you can to try and keep it in the family. Your parents could write up a will that it gets split 3 ways equally when the last surviving spouse passes, and that anyone contesting the will gets nothing. Where will your dad shoot once it's sold if they do sell it?
