I’m not sure if I made a post about this topic but here it goes. I’ve had people tell me this and I’ve heard this being said as I walk away from people. He’s lying he don’t hunt he’s just talking. In fact he doesn’t even look like a hunter. When I lived in Illinois When I did my first ever Deer hunt I had a game warden threaten to take me to jail because he said that I didn’t look like a hunter. And when I asked what does a hunter look like he became irritated and said that he was going to bring me in . My response was please do so when I go to court on Monday I asked the game warden how are you going to explain to the judge that you booked me because I didn’t look like a hunter. Then he walked away. So if anyone can tell me what a hunter looks like please tell me or show me a picture.
Thank you

Your avatar looks like a hunter to me. They must be gatherers trying to hunter shame you. They are jealous.

Pretty wierd.
In early season, when I hunt in a high stand or blind, I wear jeans and flannel shirt a lot. With a bow or gun in hand, I have never been questioned by anybody.

One of the people who keep saying this her husband and son are duck hunters . I guess because I don’t look like a tv hunter , camo , long beard and brand name gear .

I dont worry about what anybody else thinks, or what their perception is. If your doing it legally, safely, and ethically, have at it.

The only mental image I can come up with is Elmer Fudd. I don't think that's going to help much...

Elmer Fudd , Donald Duck , Goofy were a few role models for me , as I come from a almost non hunting family. My Father did a little hunting but stopped when we were born, then all I remember him going out once or twice. It wasn’t until my new neighbors moved in and they were hunters. And tv shows as well.

Well you need strategically placed face paint, a well manicured beard, and a black hoodie. Barrel stickers on your gun are optional but black hoodie is mandatory.

More years ago than I want to admit, we were hunting deer in NH. On the way from one place to another, we saw a friend raking his yard. We had 5 guys and 6 is the limit for doing drives, so we stopped and asked if he wanted to get in on our next push. He said "yeah, I just need a minute". He went in the house and came right back with his rifle and all the same clothes he had on, blue jeans, flannel shirt, baseball cap, high-top sneakers and all. Someone asked if he at least wanted to put boots on. He said "no, I don't want to look like a hunter, that's the secret". Well, we dropped him and two others off to take stands and drove around the piece of woods to start the drive. Half way through the drive I heard a shot. I finished the drive and there he was waiting at his stand. I asked if he had shot. "Yeah" he said, "three deer ran up, stopped and just looked at me". 30 yards away a nice doe was laying dead. "Better get to dressing it" I said. "Need to borrow your knife" he said.
So, there you go, not looking like a hunter can pay off.

I've never been mistaken for a non-hunter. Maybe it's the deer skull and arrow tattoos. Or maybe it's the arrow branded on my forearm.

So many times we walk fast and straight to the stand. Walk slow, stop, and look around approach helps. Like taking a Sunday walk in the woods.

My Father did a little hunting but stopped when we were born, then all I remember him going out once or twice. It wasn’t until my new neighbors moved in and they were hunters. And tv shows as well. First off, Illinois is a weird land in my opinion. Some love it, some hate it. I'm not sure what a hunter looks like. And until the State regulations mandate a dress code (other than the hunter orange) we will never know. Just keep doing what you're doing and what makes you happy. As previously stated, as long as you're doing it legally, ethically and safely, screw what the haters have to say. It does not matter or offend me either way what a hunter wears. If they want to use face paint, awesome! If they want to purchase clothing exclusively from LL Bean, great! If they just want to yard sale shop for clothes and gear, outstanding! Use a $50 scope instead of a $2,000 one, good for you! (I bring that up because a buddy just bought one and has "guaranteed" me that scope will kill him a deer. He was disappointed when I told him that scope isn't going kill squat. It's all about the hunter behind it.). Be yourself! Be happy with yourself! And most of all, be thankful to the Lord above that you live in a Country that lets you make those choices. And thank Him for blessing you with the heart of a hunter! I too come from a family of non hunters. My dad hunted and showed me the way until the last two years prior to his death. I have seven brothers and sisters and a couple handfuls of nieces and nephews. None of them hunt. I've been trying to get a couple nephews out but, there's always a reason why they can't come. I've been really trying to rack my brain on who I will be able to leave all my firearms too along with my other hunting garb. I have a 3 generation shotgun to try and pass off too but, I don't have anyone I feel that would appreciate it as much as my father and I had.

Game Wardens are like any other group. There are good and bad. You just met a bad one. The current outdoor shows remind me of NASCAR drivers. They have to mention each sponser at least once in every show. So don't worry about the "hunter look". Wear orange when required.

It was just a year or two after Indiana started allowing handguns to hunt deer, I was stopped by a C.O. just as I was coming out of the woods. He asked to see my license, "yes sir, no problem." He asked if I had shot a deer. "No sir, didn't even see one today." Then he asked if that was a handgun strapped to my leg. "Yes sir" I said, "Would you like to see it?" "No, I just wondered if that's what it was." As he shook his head. I had a belt holster holding a Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casull with an 8-3/8" ported barrel. The muzzle was closer to my knee than my belt! LOL I didn't get a deer that day, but I did knock a deer off of it's hooves when I hit it in the spine from a broadside shot. I think he tried to squat then jump. I was aiming at his chest, but hit the spine, and it was only about a 30 yard shot. That deer left it's hooves and toppled straight sideways. Kicked twice, but never took another step. I like that Raging Bull. I like the way it shoots, but I also like the way it performs, and the heads it turns.
