Hi guys, Looking for a mid-range crossbow and deciding between the PSE Fang and Killer Instincs Brawler 400. I'm not going to hunt with the first x-bow in my life for now. But it will be used for target practicing and I want to purchase smth powerful already that can be used for hunting in far future. I am now ready ot invest $300-400 for the first toy. wildproofgear.com/best-hunting-crossbows-under-400/As I learned FPS is important and makes an x-bow deadlier and precise. Where the Brawler 400 has the highest velocity of 400 FPS. What are the other features I should consider before buying my first crossbow? Have anyone ever tested PSE or Brawler? Thanks!

I've used a pse fang for deer hunting the last 4 years or so. Its plenty fast enough for me. I've had zero issues with it. I've killed 2-3 deer each season with it. I upgraded the factory scope and bolts.
Something else to consider is physical weight and axle to axle length. Especially if you might hunt with it one day. I don't know anything about the other crossbow you mentioned but the fang is light and has a short axle to axle width.

One factor is noise. When they get up to 400 FPS the noise goes up a lot. I prefer to stay under 400 FPS to keep the noise down. I don't have DB numbers but a 360 FPS seems to be half the noise as a 400 plus FPS. FPS does help to flatten the shot and getting there, but accuracy is #1 for me.

I had never shot a crossbow and wanted something cheaper to start with. I went with a Centerpoint Whisper 370. In 2 years I have got 3 deer with it. It is accurate when I am at the range out to 50 yards but I have never gone past that. The woods I hunt it is hard to go past 40. I would highly recommend it. I believe it is about $300 at Cabela's. By the time I got bolts, broadheads and other accessories I was just under $500. If you buy it there in person, they will put it together and help sight it in on their indoor range.

FPS is one of the last things I care about. A decent trigger; reasonably compact/handy are far more important to me

FPS is one of the last things I care about. A decent trigger; reasonably compact/handy are far more important to me Agreed.. since most deer are shot within 20 yards speed isn’t a biggie. Just like anything else I buy my first requirement would be quality. TenPoint makes some good quality and reasonably priced crossbows in their Wicked Ridge line. They are made in the USA. Way too many of the other crossbows come from China. Check out Wyvern Creations for crossbows. You can not get a better deal on crossbows, no matter what you chose, than buying from Dave at Wyvern Creations. www.wyverncreations.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=Wicked.

I agree with the Wicked Ridge recommendation, they`re easily the best crossbow for that price point. For me, speed is a factor though. For a crossbow, "quiet" is relative, and I don`t know of any that are really quiet. Trigger is relative as well, at least to me. My crossbow isn`t a centerfire rifle that I`m trying to reach out 250 yards, so if the trigger isn`t perfect, I don`t consider that to be an issue. Same with compact/handy. My compound was "handy", and again, I don`t know of a crossbow that would fit into those categories, they`re all unwieldy and a lot more difficult than a compound bow to hang and get into shooting position with. Feet Per Second though, that is important to me since it takes a lot of worry out of being perfect in the scope if I need to reach out to 40 yards. And just as an aside, no matter how fast the crossbow is, and this is just my personal decision, I won`t shoot past 40 yards. Too much can go wrong trying to kill a living animal with a bolt when you try to stretch that to a firearm range.
