I have a 93 Evinrude 25HP that the starter has stopped working on. Anyone have any experiences with resolving issues in the past? It spins but will not raise and engage the flywheel. I have read several places that it does not always mean it needs replaced and could be other ways to fix it. I charged the battery to eliminate that. One issue I read about was the bendix might be bound up with rust/other debris. I try to rotate it and it will not raise. Does anyone know how easy it should be to get it to raise? Should it by hand or does it need to be cranked on to raise? I am thinking this is the issue but was hoping someone else would have some input. Hopefully getting some oil to drop on it tonight.
Thanks

Also adding, it went out Sunday. Fished all morning, starting and stopping the motor. We get back to the launch, back the trailer in, and go to start it to put it on and it just spins. Not like this was the first attempt of the year or even day

Have you load tested battery? Check power cables and connectors. Make sure connectors are polished and cables are not corroded. I assume this has a solenoid seperate from the starter? Check voltage on both sides of solenoid. Do you see a voltage drop? You could bypass the solenoid to rule it out. When you crank motor what voltage are you getting to starter?

Since you used it and it worked fine most of the day I would not suspect the bendix is bound...but anything could happen. It sounds like you are not getting sufficient power to the starter.

Could there be a spring or weights that broke By chance does it have a rip cord on it you could try I know on my small motor it has a spring clutch that lifts it up Something like a Centrifugal clutch

Sorry for no update. I checked with a different battery and had no changes. I tried a few other things and finally some light taps with a hammer. After the hammer, it worked fine and has since. So it must have started to bind, which blows my mind since I had it starting 5 minutes prior. I oiled it like crazy with some 3-in-1 oil so hopefully no issues going forward.
Thanks

Right on. Glad it was a simple fix.
