This is off the deer I killed last fall. Any estimates on age? I just never cared how old a deer I shot was but thought it might be good way to learn how to age from teeth.

Can you take a close up picture looking straight down at the teeth?

Young deer. Worn just a little. No more than the 2.5 years. Not an expert.

Good genes in these woods I hunt. This deer was a 10 point buck that field dressed at 230 pounds.

He didn't dress that heavy but he is the 2.5 year old that I judge all other 2.5 year olds off of. (I still regret shooting that deer, but he wasnt very smart)

Bill, your buck is at least 4.5 years old and I would place him at that age. Again, a dandy. That tooth wear is an extremely inexact method, remember the guesses at checkins in the old days by dnr, so funny.

I do however think that cementum annuli testing of the incisor teeth is a pretty accurate process.

I’ve got to say I did not see to much tooth wear in my opinion. This particular deer was about 280 pounds before I gutted him and 230 after. His face was grayish which made me believe he was kinda older. His rack was about 161” when killed. I honestly don’t know how old he was but was curious about how people judge by teeth wear.

The deer looks grayish in the face, I know I look grayish also and that’s from being 61.

I didnt think that looked like a lot of wear either, but 2.5 year old is not going to be 160" in the wild (there is an exception to every rule), I dont care how good the genetics are. After I answered you I remembered you killed a pretty big deer. Is there a lot of AG around? Corn deer versus Acorn deer wear at different rates.

Not surprised, as freedomhunter said, teeth can be inaccurate. A deer primarily living off hard nuts is going to wear faster than an AG deer. The teeth do look more like the 2-3 range but as Greg said the deer is just way to heavy to be in that age.

First thing I thought...2.5 years old and 230 dressed do not go together. It would be the anomaly of all anomalies for sure.
