Went out this morning..had my 12 year old in blind with me. First 2 hours were dead. My son spotted the first one. it had snuck up the edge of the woodlot and was 50 yds from us in the corner. She eventually made her way to the field in front of us. 5 minutes later i catch movement in the same corner. Its a big tom and for some reason it takes off runnin to the woods to our east. I have no idea why. Would have been really hard for him to have spotted us. He didnt gobble a single time. The hen stayed and then another joined her. Ended up seeing 4 more before the neighboring landowner showed up cutting tree limbs with a chainsaw. Back out in the am.

Had the Hollywood script happen this morning. Half hour after sun up a tom and 3 hens came into the field from the woods to our left. They hung out feeding and strutting for about 30 minutes before 2 yound deer joined them. We watched the deer cross the field and head into the woods then all but one hen went back into the woods them came out of. A few minutes later a bird comes out of the woods on the right about 180 yard away. We were debating if it was hen or tom when it spotted the hen across the field then our decoys. Bird turns and slow walked our way. At about 120/130 yards I called a beard and my buddy saw it through his binoculars. This boy got in a bean row and came straight in on an very slow string. He gets about 50 yards out and stops. And stared. Straight at the decoys directly between us and him. Luckily neither of us ate White Castle last night because this dude was in no hurry at all. He finally comes in 10 more yards and puffs up. We do a couple quiet mouth calls and he goes full college kid, then relaxes the feathers. A few more yards moving slightly to our right but getting closer and he gobbles. Straight up I thought I had lost my hearing. That bird sounded like he was a half mile away. He gets to about 30 yards facing us and gobbles again. By the sounds I would have said 400+ yards.
Buddy let's the arrow fly, but looked to be in his back feathers. The guy batting cleanup didn't fair much better with the 10 gauge - twice. This thing covers 30 yards to get in the woods, 10 yards to clear the thick edge, then takes flight and I see him fly about 200 yards before I lose sight through the trees.
🤦♂️
Had a great time. The bird did more than anybody could have asked for. We just blew it massively. We are going to try again in the morning and see if we can maybe not mess up on the other bird. I don't see this one coming back any time soon.

Personally, I like afternoon / evening hunts. Knowing where birds want to be or are going is important but if you know those things it's fairly consistent to be in birds.
Youth weekend Easton and I saw 9 longbeards Saturday evening and 3, including the one he killed, Sunday evening.
A friend and his boy hunted that same place yesterday evening and saw 5 longbeards.

Planning to try again Friday morning. Saw where the birds were this morning after the hunt. Right where the landowner told us we need to be since he has been seeing them regularly. What do we know? Lol.

It's great to see something positive going on and no v!r^s talk. I tried turkey hunting twice. No thanks, not for me, not interested. I'm busier at work than I want to be and trying to get ahead before the farm ponds stabilize and pan fishing gets hot.
Keep it up and be safe.

My best friend kept on me about going for years. He said just go with me once, I will do everything, you just pull the trigger. We went, and on first ever hunt, he called me in a boss longbeard on the last day, and I knocked him out of the park! I was hooked at that point! He learned a lot of tricks from a buddy that came from TN. I'll be danged, but he knows his stuff, and I picked up on it real quick. Now, I cant wait for the season to get here. It half breaks up the year till the next deer season.

Seems like the birds are weighing more this year, lots of 24 lbers and up. A friend and I were just discussing that same thing. We are thinking that since we had such a mild winter, they had plenty to eat and didn't shed as much weight. Just a thought.

Exactly the same for me with roe deer swilk in the evening i know where they are going to be and they are coming out the tree to me sitting waiting, i probably am more succesful in the evening than the early morning trying to keep up with them as they go back into the trees. Thwt soon get to know to go back in at first light, they are not stupid, and early afternnon i sometines catch them out. Not turkey hunting but the same principle.
