Ok guys...I am working on a trip to the walleye mecca but not real sure on the options.
My buddy has a nice boat for it. I am up for trolling but he would rather jig. What months are we best suited to jig?
What public launch sites to launch from or avoid?

May and June then again in late fall October and November, they bite all summer long but it gets real hot on that lake in the summer. If it's jig fishing that you want to do then hit the reef complex out front of Wild Wings and Turtle creek during April and early May.
Here is my suggestion go in May or June, launch out of Mazurik's boat ramp between Marblehead and Port Clinton, huge ramp and you are pretty much in the middle of things. Jig fishing is just ok but if you want to put fish in the boat you need to, you must and you should troll. When your trolling with planer boards you cover much more water with 2 rods per man and you always have baits in the water. Start watching u-tubes on this topic, best all around baits is a thing called BANDITS. Another popular ramp is one called Catawba state park ramp these 2 ramps put you closest to the islands. I want to warn you that I would not venture out in much less than a 18 footer with 2 motors, a radio and a good GPS system. Here is the best tip I could give you if you go watch for 2-42 foot boats that have flying bridges, if you see them keep your distance and try to mimic them. also a 34 foot Catamaran called Eagle Eye.
If you really want to get a feel and learn your way around you should fish with a good charter at least once it will be eye opening.

If you don’t have a deep V boat get off the water the first sign of a storm especially that lake I had a 21 footer made for rough water by far that body of water was the worst and many of days it threw me around like a kite that lake has one heck of a undertow and is shallow that’s why it gets so rough in minutes
Things may of changed since I sold my boat but I believe you must have a ship to shore radio on board on any of the Great Lakes myself I would of not been on them with out that and gps and backup compass but we’d run out 15 miles sometimes to hit fish at the thermo incline
Depending on size of boat I know fire extinguisher are also mandatory on the Great Lakes but this was all 15 years ago and I’m sure many changes have been made
Some good small mouth around the islands if your into those

Since that is governed by the Coast guard, I would imagine you could go to their website and see what is required. I'm guessing horn, flotation devices for each person, navigation lights if before sunrise or post sunset, fire extinguisher, paddle or oars, etc.

I'd go a few times with a guide to see what you are in for before I put my own boat on lake Erie. That lake gets really rough at times.

I just remembered starting this year you can now have 3 rods per man in Ohio.
I have been on a boat that had 16 rods out trolling and when we hit a pod of fish we had 14 rods go off within about 20 minutes.

We'd be lucky to get 9 out on the boat. 14 in 20 min would melt us down!

We'd be lucky to get 9 out on the boat. 14 in 20 min would melt us down! When it's on, it's like going to a health club, it happens so fast and furious it sometimes doesn't feel like fishing. But you will forget about all the rush when your having a walleye supper and a few beers.

Using GIANT plainer boards pulling various lures such as Bandit's, Reef Runners, Perfect 10's or Yeck spoons behind jets. The depths will vary.
When you have 16 rods out you have got to know what your doing or you will have HUGE cluster fudges, everybody needs to be on the same page. The charter we fish on everybody needs to help because the quicker you can get the fish in and the rod reloaded the quicker you can get done. The bite could end real quick.

Heck, two of us had troubles with 6 rods in the water and they all get hit at the same time by wipers. It’s a blast though. Erie is on my list for sure. I’m hoping this year some time.
