Ok, so, as I gave an account of in an earlier thread, I have a Ruger .30-06 that I need the scope adjusted for the proper eye relief for me. I won`t go into all the silly details, but I called a local gun store on the West Side and talked to whoever answered the phone. After a 5 minute round and round conversation, I was sorry I wasted my time and his. After explaining that I needed to have the scope moved back to allow for the proper eye relief for me, he told me in an exasperated voice that they do their gunsmithing work after hours, and so I wouldn`t be there...I finally just said, well obviously that won`t work then, will it. Absolutely unbelievable.
So, anyway, my question is this: does anyone know of a gunsmith type guy on the West Side of Indianapolis/Avon area that would actually help me loosen this scope, adjust it as much as necessary to get the proper eye relief for me, then tighten it down and bore sight it? I don`t know if the scope can be moved far enough back in the rings, or if the mounts have to be mover back.
And yes, I already know that it`s really unacceptable for a guy my age to not know how to do this for myself. But still, here I am.
I`d appreciate any recommendations you have.

Usually it only takes a couple Allen wrenches. If you want to drive down to Bedford we can do it. I'll even make you a cup of coffee.

Blue Loctite them screws too..... gregr, if you want to make the drive up here get 2 boxes of ammo that you will hunt with, make sure they are the same lot number. I can move the scope for ya and we can sight it in at 100, 200 or 300 yds and you can shoot it here. I should be able to get it sighted in at 100 yds (if the scope tracks reliably) in <5 shots.

As usual esshup, you are incredibly kind, and I was going to PM lawrencecountyhunter, but I`ll just say it here, thanks to you too for your offer to help. You guys don`t even know me, other than from my posts here, and your generosity is almost unthinkable. I know Bedford is way down south, and I know you`re considerable up north. Let me PM you again esshup.

You differently don’t want to loosen the screws very much if your expecting the POI to remain the same!
I am sure every scope will not be the same.

Maybe an isolate incident, maybe due to the quality of the product? Anyway.....
Nesika Bay Receiver Nesika Bay 20 moa scope base Nightforce scope rings Nightforce NSX Scope
All of a sudden accuracy went to pot. Turns out the base loosened up on the receiver. Only way to tighten it up was to remove scope and rings. That was done as a unit, leaving rings attached to scope.
Cleaned/degreased threads in receiver and scope base screws, reinstalled the base. Reinstalled the scope rings and scope on the base, making sure rings were at the front of the slots in the base. To my surprise the 300 yd zero was the same - didn't have to re-adjust the scope at all.
Anytime sights/scope is loosened up or moved, shooting the gun to verify POI is mandatory.
Maybe it's just my laser bore sighter, but I don't trust it's accuracy at all. I can put it in the muzzle, hold the gun in a rest so it doesn't move. Put a target at 20 feet, then rotate the laser bore sighter. It will "scribe about a 2" circle on the paper when rotated.
I've had better results (bolt action gun) by pulling the bolt, putting the gun in a rest like a lead sled, and centering the bore on a target at 100 yds. Then while not moving the gun, move the crosshairs so they are center of target. Shoot one, move crosshairs to bullet hole, shoot again. If the gun is accurate with that load, it will be pretty durn close to being sighted in at that point.
I've also had guns with a cheap scope that doesn't move the crosshairs in accordance to the clicks on the scope and it's taken a whole box of ammo to get it sighted in too.
On guns that aren't that accurate, I'll shoot a couple 3 shot groups and mark the center of each 3 shot group. If the center of the group is the same in relation to the aiming point then I will use 3 shot groups like that to verify the movement of the scope adjustments instead of 1 bullet hole.

I hunted with a muzzleloader in Colorado then Kansas back to back this year. You cannot use a scope in Colorado, you can in Kansas. I used quick release mounts and took the scope off for Colorado, then re-mounted it alongside the road in Commanche National Grassland and re-zeroed. POI moved about 6" at 100 yards.
I also put my girls' scopes on their .22s this past Christmas and zeroed. I then moved them to the appropriate eye relief for them and re-tightened, after they opened them up on Christmas. POI didn't change at all, granted they were only zeroed at 25 yards.

Gregr, What part of the state are you located in? I've been mounting my own scopes and sighting them in since I was about 15 years old, and I'm north of 60 these days. I'd be willing to move your rings, if necessary, adjust the scope for eye relief, and maybe bore-sight it. I have a laser bore sighter for .30-06/.308. It won't be perfect, but will get you on paper to where you should be able to dial it in yourself. We could accomplish this without firing a shot.
Or, If you want to meet me in southern Fountain county, near Kingman, I can let you use my property to shoot out to 100 yards, maybe a little more.
At any rate, I'm sure we can get you the proper eye relief, and in the ballpark. I'd be happy to do this for no charge, but you need to supply the ammo.
Pm me if interested. BTW- I'm in Lafayette.

I don't think I've ever paid someone to mount a scope. I think I paid one person, many MANY moons ago, to sight-in a scope for me.
I'm cheap I guess...just call me frugal-fred.

I worked in a gun shop for about a dozen years. We mounted scopes for free if bought through the shop and then I got paid to sight them in if they wanted that as part of the service.
What a way to make money!!! Shooting other peoples' guns and getting PAID for it!!

What a way to make money!!! Shooting other peoples' guns and getting PAID for it!! A few years ago I had a friend call me and ask a favor. He managed a large warehouse here in Indiana and had a serious issue. Seems there was a snow drift that accumulated on the flat roof of the warehouse and the weight of the snow partially collapsed the roof. He was concerned that once the snow started to melt that it would all run to the low spot and bring the roof down. Knowing I was a gun owner he asked if I would come to the warehouse and use my .357mag pistol to shoot drain holes in the roof to allow the melted snow to escape. There was an apartment building on the next lot over so I told him "no, I will not use my .357, but I would run home and get my 12ga. He agreed, so I returned to the warehouse about 30 minutes later with my Mossberg 500 and some buckshot. I had more fun than I can relate, walking around that warehouse blasting holes through the roof. I blew about a dozen or so rounds through that roof and it immediately started raining inside the warehouse. I now tell people that at one time I was a "hired gun"!
