Hey, hang on to some of that. Nothing can grow in that high concentration of sugar, so makes good ointment. Will come in handy when all hell breaks lose. beewax and propolis is even better. The honey with comb is awesome. Hopefully, I will have some of that product next year. Propolis and its extracts have numerous applications in treating various diseases due to its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antimycotic, antifungal, antiulcer, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties. Beeswax help reduce your risk of diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer ( 12 ). Honeycomb also contains beeswax, which provides heart-healthy long-chain fatty acids and alcohols.

I went into the winter with 8 hives, came out this spring with 3. I split one of them 2 different times and both times the split just died out. I just caught a swarm last week and it was huge, they're doing well now.

So far none of my hives swarmed. Checked weight on 13 hives and 3 are good for winter. Six hives are border line, but should be okay in a few weeks. Four are light and I will be feeding them starting Saturday. I already cut top insulation boards and enough hive wrap for 4 hives. I'll need some more wrap. I'm done opening the hives. Just the tops to put insulation board and the light ones feeder inner covers. I'll fill those with sugar.

I kinda picked up a new very small hive. I beekeeper friend when on a swarm call and it was about to cups of bees (500) and a nice queen. So I have a nuc that I put R6 high density boards inside the 5 frame and doubled the sides for R12 and R6 on top, bottom, front, and back. It now holds 3 frames. I have the bees and queen and the hive nuc is under the porch for winter rain or snow protection. The nuc is a wax cardboard construction.

Waynes what is your method for treating varroa mites ? I like to use Apivar strips during the summer dearth right after taking off honey mediums or supers in July. They stay on for 6 weeks. After the 1st freeze I will treat one time with OVA. Around Halloween time. I bought one of those Johnny Provap. I wait for no drone brood and very little to no capped brood. I have a 3/8 hole in each lower brood box with 3/8 dowel to plug the hole.

It will be interesting how they do with this set up. Will you continue through the winter with the sugar water or switch to a sugar cake and pollen ?

It will be interesting how they do with this set up. Will you continue through the winter with the sugar water or switch to a sugar cake and pollen ? I will be adding a pollen patty when I check this weekend. The queen was able to fly so I'm given her a few days to fatten up and start laying. I have the front dial on queen extrude position. Yes, I will sugar water feed until the high temperature do don't get into the high 50's. Yes again, I will had a sugar cake appropriately 2"w x 1"h x 19"l. Sugar cake on one side and high sugar-pollen patty on the other. I will also add a little shallow bowl of water. I have the wax cardboard nuc under my porch. Should not get wet or snow. Maybe a little blowing and that's it. I Hoping to get a minimum of 1 frame of bees. It's an experiment.

Witness a very neat honeybee fire drill. This is what happens when a European Faced Hornet enters a hive. All the young bees bail out while guard and forager bees kill the hornet. Of course a few patriot bees die saving their home. imgur.com/FlJRUO610 to 15 minutes later after a quick rain all back to normal imgur.com/8KKJV6X

When I went to check the quart mason jars to see if empty I just killed a European Faced Hornet. One of those decided to attack one of two strongest hives. That is what happens when one of those hornets enter a hive. All the nurse bees will evacuate. Nurse bees have never been out of the hive and can't fly right away. Never flown before. The older bees (foragers and guard) ball up the hornet and kill the hornet. Of course a dozen or two bees die. Once clear the young bees fly back. Their 1st flight. About 15 minutes later the bees pulled out the hornet. The Bald Faced Hornet is actually a wasp and part of the yellow-jacket family. www.rescue.com/latest-buzz/outdoor-pests/bald-faced-bully/

Was just curious on what enemy they were after. Was hoping it wasn't one of the new invaders.

I stopped outside remote feeding last week and when back with mason jars on top. Feeder attacking unwanted pests. Hornets just showed up. yesterday was the 1st day seeing them. No yellow-jackets yet! 🤞🏻

Converting some Rockwell Automation ladder logic to CodeSYS structure text.
