The rain we just received should get the ragweed (allergies) and goldenrod (butterscotch honey) in full bloom. Aster (stinky honey) near the end of goldenrod with some overlap.

There is little country store that sells local honey for people. Just picked up 2 lbs for 14.99. That stuff is good.

I took this one down from a tree right next to my barn a couple weeks ago. Don’t know how they never came after me as I drove the tractor right by it many times and it wouldn’t have been much higher than my head.

The season is almost a wrap. Just a little more mite treatment on 4 hives. Here's a little trailer of a new movie coming on 1/12/24 called "The Beekeeper" www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq1HdW5_ZYc

The last few days, I've been going through every hive and adding one or two 3 pound sugar bricks. I'm still feeding external 2 to 1 sugar-water and bee pollen. This warm late fall is hard on the bees. By late winter, a lot of them will starve to death.
I did learn another instance on how smart honeybees are. During September-October the queen lay winter bees. These bees are a little bigger and can store more food for winter survival. If they don't fly those bees can live up to 6 months and get the queen and bees through winter. If they start flying a lot, the winter bees will die in two weeks because the wings are worn out and the bee never makes it back to the hive. That is how most bees die. When I was going through the top of the hives to add bricks, I noticed the bees only flew a few inches to feet and back in the top of the hive. Not even out of the box. Very limited flying even though it was 67 degrees out. In the summer the bees would be flying all around and a lot more of them. I asked a good 3rd generation beekeeper this observation and yes, he informed me that they have done studies on this observation. The winter bees know to limit the flying during the 6 months. During the winter the bees know not to fly if all possible. Once it stays warm the winter bees will fly to forage and then die in two weeks.
Our Savior and mother nature is fantastically amazing. This is just one insect.

Here is the project I've been working on. Always staying busy reading or project working. I updated the horizontal hive that I built last year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7d-5DLbj2A

he last week of the year, I tore down my 8 x 8 honey room and 8 x 12 work bench. Now the 8 x 20 area is the honey room. I have more equipment for the honey production. I have one more coat of paint, but this Wednesday I'm heading down to Louisville, KY for a very large bee expo. About 3042 beekeepers and support crew from 26 countries. 2nd coat will be the following week project. This is what I started with after tearing down the wall and door. imgur.com/6QRMzcMRight where the chair is sitting is the old wall. I built that chair back in 1986 in Fort Wayne. It is now used as my grafting chair. Where the work bench was. The new work bench is on the opposite left side of the wall.

I'm leaving in 20 minutes to the North America Honey Bee Expo. 110 minute drive to Louisville, KY I'll take some pictures. You gona see if you can find 628 dirtrooster,Mr Ed, yappy and some of the other you tube stars. I know all of them and have met all of them the past 3 years. Yes, I talked to Randy (dirtrooster) a lot. Went and had dinner Thursday with the gang. Jeff (Mr. Ed) was not at dinner. I had a blast. It ended out 3500 of us crazy beekeepers. Good time Charlie and Ricky Ralph was there this time. Best part I didn't see one unhappy person, all smiles and laughter. I was good not buying a lot of stuff. I did pre buy an uncapping tank, 300 deep frames and an Apimaye hive. The Apimaye hive is for the learning yard. I'm starting a new learning yard this spring and getting some of the different types of hives. Only one at show buy and that was an auto bottle filler. It was marked down 50%. This will save me a lot of time and precise bottle fill. One other that I liked was a bottle label machine, but one big item was enough. Manually labeling 2000 bottle is a pain. I need to design and build one. By the way. I'm on youtube on Tuesdays, 8pm, no life beekeeping. Most time Bob Walker bees or Kodiak Farm Bees (Lee). Look for Live (KF Stream) is hosting the stream.
