Brian and his collage bud drew bear tags for the BWCA, I tried to convince them to try for another area but they said "we got this". You see this is a non-motorized area, you can use bait but cant leave it in the woods overnight or unattended. I told the boys chances of killing a bear in there are slim to none. Well they done their scouting all summer, had spots picked. Brian would drop Hunter off then canoe across a small lake and setup at his spot, each brought honey burners. Hunters spot was back in off the lake 1 1/4 mile. Mind you there are no trails, this is all hiking through old growth timber. I get a call at 9pm, Hunter has shot a big bear but how do we get it out. My reply "you got this ". 1:30 A.M. they get the last hind quarter and hide into the canoe. Next morning they drive the 3 hours to my house so dad can process it for Hunter. They brought every bit of the carcass out except some fat they removed to shed weight. After weighing all the quarters, rib cage, hide and head it weighed 253lb. I asked them if it was worth the work, "yep, now we have to get Brians bear". I can remember when I was young and could tackle the world, now I bear hunt places where I can get the wheeler to the bait, head shoot so I dont have to drag .

While processing this bear I found steel shot in his face and chest, different sized lead shot in his ars, and a 22 just under his hide in the neck. Im guessing the locals are glad this trouble making, cabin raider is gone.

Having fished the Boundary Waters area for several years and then another decade of summer fishing trips into the Quetico I have a great respect and love for that area. One of the things that makes it so good is the ruggedness and the lack of human interest to penetrate those areas.
Your son and his friends are living the life and I hope they know it, because someday they to will say I'll hunt closer to a road.

This summer Brian and a couple of his buds stayed in ely and worked for outfitters. Brian loved it, he was in the BWCA almost daily taking canoes and clients in. Working for the outfitter they had a motor permit that would allow them so far in. I would have liked to seen him come home for the summer, could have made more money working around home, I never complained because I also know you only live once and you better enjoy every minute while you can.
