It should only take one shot to kill a deer. There is no reason to fire 10 shots at a deer in less than 3 second. Its unsafe for the public and unfair to the deer. It’s not a war zone. Have some respect for the deer. Stop flinging lead and wounding the animal. Take your time, aim, one shot.

Now back in the day when people carried semi-auto slug guns, it was nothing to hear several shots in rapid succession.

It is always fun to hear the bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, silence bang, silence bang. My first park hunt the flyer that came with the acceptance letter said they did not want to hear the volleys of shots. That did not last.

I learned early on the value of one shot. I have never once fired in rapid succession to harvest any game. It is comical to hear it, but as you stated, dangerous not knowing where unaimed bullets can go. Let's use common sense out there!

I agree, it should only take one shot to kill a deer. But if I get the opportunity, I'm going to take a follow up shot just for insurance.

I think all the new shooters should only load 1 to make sure they take their time and make that one shot count. I have a friend that can make a pump or bolt action sound like a semi-auto, and he NEVER seems to make a killing shot with the first trigger pull. I keep telling him that he should hunt the muzzleloader season and I'd let him borrow my muzzleloader. "too complicated for me" is his reply.

Meh...I'll put as many in a deer as I can. I get what you're saying but not every multi shot sequence you hear is spraying unaimed shots. I was ready to put a second shot in my buck this year till he fell over.

I'll have another one ready to go, but if I know the shot is good (sometimes I can stay in the gun well enough to see the bullet impact the deer) I won't shoot again due to more meat damage.

I have seen a few deer that guys have shot with slugs that you would not need a grinder to make hamburger with. I guess if they see it twitching they are still shooting.

Seems like this thinking has changed over the years. I remember the first fully rifled single shot I deer hunted with my buddies were concerned I wouldn’t be able to reload quick enough. I told them I only needed one shot. Now more and more specialty singles are being used. I used to think if I couldn’t put 5 slugs in the air I was handicapped.

My go to for many was a muzzle loader. I had a lot of deer tagged before I used a slug gun. A couple I had to reload on. Eventually went to a flintlock. My theory is if they are moving then they may get up so if possible I shoot again.

Glad I don't hunt deer with a gun. But it's interesting to read all the responses in here. While you guys are out hunting deer I'm out with my AR15 shooting coyotes. But I refuse to get out in the woods during deer hunting season. I'll wait until it's colder and then go out when everyone else is out of the woods and fields. It's safer for everyone that way.

On a park hunt a couple years ago I was one of those 4 shot volleys out of my 1100 20ga. I would have stopped at 3 but I thought I missed the first round. 3 dead deer in under 30 seconds. Mission accomplished.

Mission accomplished. I did the same thing a few years back at Shakamak. 4 shots in about 45 seconds. 3 mature doe down. Walked out after field dressed and a DNR drove by. He stopped and I asked if they help get deer out as they do at McCormick Creek. He said yes and then said. I heard ya open up on it. I said which one. I have 3 down. He looked at me and said holy crap. I will go get a buggy. Lol

Now that area is so grown up you have a hard time seeing 20 yds and when I hunted it you could see 150 yds or so.
