Hunters can help monitor deer populations in northwest and northeast Indiana for chronic wasting disease (CWD) by voluntarily submitting samples for testing at Fish & Wildlife Area properties from Sept. 28, 2019 – Jan. 31, 2020. DNR biologists will also be intensively sampling hunter-harvested deer at businesses across the surveillance areas during opening weekend of firearms season, Nov. 16 and 17, 2019. Hunters who submit a deer for CWD testing will receive a Deer Management Partner magnet and a metal tag reminiscent of historical confirmation tags.
CWD is a neurologic disease that affects white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, and moose. The fatal disease is transmitted directly through bodily fluids such as feces, saliva, blood, or urine, or indirectly through environmental contamination of soil, plants, food, or water. CWD is found in free-ranging white-tailed deer in several Midwestern states close to Indiana, including Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. CWD has not been detected in Indiana.

(From another source)
"The hunting media and wildlife health organizations should stop using photos of skin-and-bones, drooling lab deer to represent "CWD." Many hunters now think that unless a deer looks like that, it's healthy. In CWD zones, you can't make that assumption."

Attention out-of-state hunters: Make sure you follow the carcass transportation regulations for your home state AND Indiana. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) strictly limits the movement of cervid carcasses and body parts into Indiana to the following: - Commercially processed meat, which may contain bone - Carcasses or parts of carcasses if no portion of the head, spinal cord, or small intestine is attached or otherwise included - Carcasses or parts of carcasses that include the head, spinal cord, or small intestine, if they are delivered within 72 hours after entry to one of the following: a meat processor inspected by BOAH, a commercial deer processor registered with DNR for processing, or a taxidermist licensed by DNR - Antlers, including those attached to skull caps, if the skull cap is cleaned of all brain and muscle tissue - Hides - Upper canine teeth, also known as "bugler," "whistlers," or "ivories" - Finished taxidermist mounts For more information, visit www.in.gov/boah/2430.htm.

This is the first known case of CJD in a patient who had consumed deer antler velvet. Despite the confirmed diagnosis of CJD, a causal relationship between the patient’s disease and his consumption of deer antler velvet cannot be definitively concluded. Supplemental data including molecular tissue sample analysis and autopsy findings could yield further supporting evidence. Given this patient’s clinical resemblance to CBD and the known histological similarities of CBD with CJD, clinicians should consider both diseases in the differential diagnosis of patients with a similarly esoteric presentation. Regardless of the origin of this patient’s disease, it is clear that the potential for prion transmission from cervids to humans should be further investigated by the academic community with considerable urgency. thescipub.com/pdf/ajidsp.2021.43.48.pdfcreutzfeldt-jakob-disease.blogspot.com/2021/05/a-unique-presentation-of-creutzfeldt.htmlkind regards, terry
