Sitting in the woods now with a virgin AR15 in .350 Legend. I hit the buy button on a Bear Creek Arsenal 20" complete upper just over a week ago. It arrived at my door step in 3 days! I had also ordered a couple of mags and they came the same day. I assembled a stripped lower I had in the safe and headed to the range. Less than 1 box of Winchester Super X 180gr and I was dialed in.
I already have my buck, but hoping to see a nice doe. Update to follow...

It's an accurate upper for the price.

The only reason I didn't use mine this year is because my ruger american is so much lighter. I bought it because I figured ARs would be banned by now.

I do not see it happening, at least not without a really big firefight first. Be that as it may, I sold mine off only because they are just not me and my style of guns. I dont shoot the kind of volume they represent, not care for the weight, and especially the noise of cycling and finicky nature that causes jams. Recreation is one thing, in the woods, just not for me. I do love the platform and comfort, so certainly cant say I'd never own another.

I gingerly cycled mine in the dark and got a dreaded "click" when I tried to shoot a doe. Zero chance you can cycle a new round in without blowing them out.

I would tap the forward assist to make sure it locked up completely.

I would tap the forward assist to make sure it locked up completely. The side charger doesn't have a forward assist.

The side charger doesn't have a forward assist. The FA is now the charging handle on the side chargers. I wondered that, but never had one in hand to mess with. Seemed like it would be a huge detriment without some way to push it home.

Depending on manufacturer, the charging handle may be small and would need a gloved hand or something to smack it with to keep from hurting the heel of your hand.

If you have good ammo it should just need a push to confirm its at home. If you need more than that you got issues.

I've got a .300 Blackout in an AR and when I am hunting I drop the 1st round into the chamber and ease the charging handle back forward so that the carrier doesn't slam forward making a bunch of noise in the woods or discharging that round from the floating firing pin striking the chambered round (did that once at the range when I was brand new to ARs; not fun even though nobody was around). I don't know if my extractor is just pretty tight, but I have to push my FA pretty good to get the bolt over the cartridge rim. I was just thinking about having to do that if the charging handle was the size and shape of a 10/22's.

The firing pin hits every round a little everytime it chambers. If the round had the correct primer in it, SRP and not SPP, it shouldn't fire upon closing. The cup is softer on spp and the floating firing pin can fire the round when chambering. What I've been told, I have not tested that. Imo a side charging handle will have more push than a FA button working on some notches on the bolt.

I Googled it when I got home and found several occurrences of that happening. Because no energy of the carrier is consumed by picking up and moving a cartridge from the mag to the chamber, the carrier still has all of its inertia/momentum and the floating firing pin is still travelling top speed when the bolt slams shut.
EVERY case that I had read about this happening was the exact same scenario as mine, the cartridge was placed in the chamber by hand and the bolt was let fly. Boom upon closing.
