For some reason yesterday the idea jumped in my head to dig out the old Marlin model 60 for next weekend. I haven't carried a 22 since I got the 17 around fifteen years ago. Should be fun. I tend to do a bit of rotation during season. Usually start out with the BL-22 early in the season. It was my first gun that I got when I was 8. Then I move to the 17 Mach 2. May even carry the old Topper .410 a time or two if I get real nostalgic. Occasionally will bring out the 17 HMR. But the Mach 2 is my favorite. My Topper 410 usually comes out when I'm having a bad year or if I'm taking kids out and I'm playing backup.

I haven’t looked this season, but man 410 shells were through the roof on price last year. I just stuck with my NEF 20 gauge single shot.

I definitely have a squirrel problem at my place. I need to thin some out but, I don't like eating them. I can't wait to get my new .22 out and try it on some squakers rather than steel targets.

Find someone that will take them to eat. Maybe an older couple.

Maybe you haven't had them right yet? I dont love them by any means, but do eat them. I found out how to make squirrel and dumplings, and I have naysayers begging for more. It has changed my taste buds that much.

It's not that I don't like them per se, it's more that I don't crave them like I do deer or turkey. And I think you are right, maybe if they were made differently I would get that craving for them.

genesis273, A couple of recipes that will change your mind. I take all my older squirrels, and pressure cook them, then pull the meat off the bone. At that point, the meat can go back in the freezer, for future use. Also at that time I've taken the squirrel and thrown it in the crockpot, added mushroom slices, chopped onion, and Swwet Baby Rays BBQ sauce. Cook it on low, for about 6 hrs. YUM!! A variation is to replace the BBQ sauce, with Teryaki sauce, and do the same thing.
If you are into chicken pot pie, you can make that out of squirrel meat. Hope this helps.

I started going with my dad when I was old enough to keep up and keep quiet. I have an old Model 39M Marlin, with a Simmons 3 x 9 scope, that has killed enough squirrels to fill a bed of a pickup truck to the rails. That is still my go to choice of firearm, but I have several new(er) choices. I have a very accurate Traditions Crockett .32 caliber muzzleloader, a Ruger MK III Hunter pistol with a holographic red dot scope, a Rossi gallery model .22 LR, ( a copy of an model 52 Winchester pump gun), and a Model 500 Mossberg .410 pump gun. Where to start? Keep yer powder dry. robin

Sounds like you have some great options.

All I know is I’m ready to take care of this rampaging group of squirrels that keep tearing up the trash can we keep our chicken food in. Had to switch it over to a metal one as they kept chewing holes in the lid. There were 6 around the coop a few days ago.

Taking my uncle out Thursday morning. He's pretty disabled but I think we can make it work. We'll probably move along the ridge top and I'll bring a chair for him to sit on from time to time.

Well, been planning my opening day hunt for a while now. Just found out, yesterday, I have to have my wife at the hospital, for a heart scan, at 7am, opening morning. Guess opening day, for me, is gonna be Friday.

I confirmed my zero on my Savage 22lr this afternoon. Loaded my mags and dug out my orange safety vest. All ready to go! We won't be in the woods at the break of dawn but we'll get there around 8:30. I hope at least one of us limit out.

Well, my wife got through the heart scan with just a stint. Otherwise she is ok. Heading out for my first hunt of the year, in a little while. Looking forward to it.

I've never squirrel hunted alone, usually in a group so I just preferred it as a safety precaution. I am assuming it's required? Perhaps I should brush up on that.
