Some of my CRP ground is in native prairie grasses where my mid contract management requires that we have to strip disc, which means that you disc a strip and knock it down, leave an equal strip standing, then disc down another strip, etc., etc. They don't allow you to do it between 4/1 and 8/1 due to nesting season for birds and game. I don't like doing it after 8/1 because the habitat is all knocked down when hunting season starts.
With thaw expected any day, I took advantage of the still frozen ground and did my discing today without worry of getting stuck, making big ruts, etc. When things green up in spring these fields will all regrow real nice and I'll have head high grasses and great habitat come fall.
Been doing some hinge cutting also on some areas of junk trees. Makes some of the best thick bedding cover and small game overhead protection from birds of prey that you could ask for.

I have to get in gear. I have a 7 acre field that needs to be burned this Spring. Unfortunately it butts up to mature woods on 2 sides so I have to brush hog/burn a barrier around it before I can light the field proper.
