On my way home last evening and spotted a nice 8-pt buck + a doe standing right on the edge of the road. As I got closer, they turned and ran - together - with do following the buck.
If the rut had already started, wouldn't the doe be trying to get away from the buck (not following him as he ran away)?
ETA: We got our first snow today.

Not if shes close to being ready to breed, nor if they got the living daylights scared out of them by almost being hit.

I've seen all different behaviors lately. Bucks staged near does but not being aggressive, chasing, does by themselves, bucks by themselves. Probably just depends on what is happening in your local area.

I think it's on. The son of one of my friends took this pic yesterday Several years ago I hunted a farm with a ditch like that. Some people thought I was nuts for hanging a stand to watch it.

Well last weekend I watched bucks chasing hard and then yesterday I watched a lone buck eat acorns for 15 minutes. Never know how it’ll be day to day in the woods.

Before my dad had passed we hunted a farm that had a ditch that ran through it. He would NOT leave after a morning hunt without walking the banks to glass for deer.

Rut is on. Breeding has started. Had a buck breed a doe right in front of me on Nov. 3RD. Full blown seeking and chasing currently with some bucks locked down with Doe's. I saw 3 bucks chasing while driving home yesterday at 3:30. Don't blink or your gonna miss it.

A ditch is all I have to hunt this year. I was back there a few days ago to find me a spot and found a spot where 4 trails all come together in the ditch, that's where I'll be.

So sat was slow. 10 hours for the whole day and saw 2 little bucks. Same for the other guys I hunt with but one of their sons saw 17 deer total!!! This goes to show that two people sitting only 200 yards away from eachother can have drastic differences based on where your sitting and where the deer are. But I enjoyed the scene and quiet. Put a towel on my platform and it made a HUGE difference in my feet staying warm and helped me hunt longer.
Seeing the little bucks, they were on the move but not exactly at a fast face or nose to the ground. One guy said since we didn't see any bigger bucks he thinks they are locked down and another guy said that we haven't hit peak rut yet? Idk, gotta get out and hunt as much as I can now but what are y'alls thoughts? Could the rut be more active this year for opening wknd?

I think the big boys have found the first does to come in and have locked down with them. Young bucks are still crusing around trying to find one. From what ive been seeing at my places.

What kind of stand do you have? My feet are always the first thing to get cold. I have tried the toe warmers and they just don't seem to get hot enough to do anything.

I seen a big buck in Greenfield today 10:30 am along a tree line. Look like he was messing around with a licking branch and there was a doe a couple yards behind him.

I want to hear more about this towel trick. What kind of stand do you have? My feet are always the first thing to get cold. I have tried the toe warmers and they just don't seem to get hot enough to do anything. I’ve found that when my feet start getting cold that I just keep my heels of my feet on the edge of the platform and kinda hang rest of my feet out in the open not touching the platform they will gradually warm up. Granted that’s while sitting down. But the metal of the stand I believe makes your feet get cold quicker so I may try this towel trick

I want to hear more about this towel trick. What kind of stand do you have? My feet are always the first thing to get cold. I have tried the toe warmers and they just don't seem to get hot enough to do anything. I just folded up a bath towel and put it on my platform big enough for both feet to fit on the towel. That way the bottoms of my boots don't touch the metal but rather the towel and the towel does not conduct cold like the metal. Its a cheap way to insulate. It helped a lot!
