I have a fine Pedersoli double barreled 12 ga muzzleloading shotgun that I've owned for almost 27 years now. The gun has served me well and I've taken much game, including turkeys with the old smoke pole. Recently I got the gun down to insure it was in shape for squirrel season, when while disassembling, I noticed that the right side lock spring had fractured. It is a clean break on a folded "leaf" type spring. My question is this...can the spring possible be repaired by welding it and then reheat-treating to put the "spring" back into the metal? I have searched the internet for a spring but only found a complete replacement lock, spring, hammer and all for over $150 bucks. A little pricy so that is why I'm asking about "welding". Thanks, BOBinIN

Did you try Numrich gun parts?

No, springs can't be fixed by welding. Material is too different and it will most likely crack again near the weld.

A good tool maker could probably make you a new spring if you know any that will do you a favor. If you have to pay his rate, the $150 for complete new assembly will probably seem reasonable.

First I would contact Pedersoli direct to see if they can get you one. If that fails contact L&R Lock company. Their springs are hand forged and since you have the old spring as a model maybe they could whip one up. www.lr-rpl.com/Maybe a really skilled Tig welder could get it done since the break is at the bend. Go to Track of the Wolf. Their online catalog has full size pics of their locks. Find a spring that is close and adapt it. You can always make your own. I have never done it but this video makes it look easy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lejQRe2Plag
