I have been hunting public land the last couple years a never see any quail, pheasant or grouse. Usually they will mow some trails in the tall stuff to aid access to the fields but this year it seems like they are letting it go and haven't cut down anything. Today while I was out crow hunting I was walking through some tall grass along a tree line when about five or six all brown chicken size birds flushed out in front of me and flew into the woods. I couldn't tell what they were. They weren't particularly fast but almost clumsy, I thought they might be young turkeys but I didn't know if turkeys would be bunched up like that on the ground. Anybody got a guess as to what they probably were.

Turkey poults would have been my first guess.

I had a group of 8-10 turkey poults do the exact same thing. I was questioning what kind of birds they were until the hen kicked up.
