The farm I take care of is about to experience a drastic change. Logging is planned for this year and one of the most cumbersome fields I have ever seen will no longer be planted after this harvest. I know it is getting enrolled into CRP, but I don't know all the rules involved.
Can that field be planted in native grasses or does it just have to be left to whatever pops up?
If it can be planted, what grasses should I be looking for? It's mostly hilly with well drained rocky soil, but there is a couple bottom sections that don't drain well.
Also, will we be allowed under the program to plant trees? I'm thinking groups of soft mast, but a few hardwood in some of the more questionable current crop areas might be a good idea.

If it’s enrolled in CRP the planting is specific to what ever plan it is The FSA along with the NRCS will give you the plans It’s too late for this year. To be implemented A fall burndown will be first then a spring burn down then drill before June 15th unless it is a tree planting CRP that’s the skinny all your questions will be answered when you see the plan there are several and specific to what can be planted or done

You really need to know the details of what type of CRP program the owner is enrolling into, or any further conversation is pretty pointless. What you can and can't do from one program to the next varies. Most of my tall native prairies grasses are in the SAFE program.

I don't know what program it is, I haven't had the chance to talk to them myself. I'm getting second hand information from one of the farmhands.
I didn't realize there was a variety of CRP programs. I will get better information and revisit this.
