To answer all 3 questions, I will be taking 2 rifles, both in 7mm. Gun #1 is a custom long range rifle. Currently I'm shooting a 180 grain Berger VLD at 3350 fps MV. I have some 200g bullets for it that have a higher bc, but haven't figured out a load for them yet. (.77 G1 for the Bergers, .91 G1 for the other bullets) #2 is a Browning A-Bolt, 7mm Rem Mag.
The area is near Eagle, Colorado. DIY, but my cousins hunt that same area every year and have done so for the past 25+ years, so sort of guided - he will tell me where to sit and glass.
I will be meeting him out there sometime around mid August to do some scouting, and do some shooting to get the rifles dialed in - at least the long range one. He shoots a Tikka T3 in 7mm too, and some years he's seen deer that were just too far away to shoot, and there was no way to get to them in time. I shouldn't have that problem with the Long range gun. Every year there is a deer in that area that is pushing or is over 200". The DNR said that there were 2 good deer years prior to this season, so the deer should have come thru winter in great shape. Time will tell, camp is at 10,000' elevation and he said they hunt up from there.....
I have my fingers crossed. 7 years of preference points were burned.

Weather can be tough one time we we hunted most of the day and it looked a storm was on its way by the time we made back the temps dropped 30 degs maybe more it atleast it seemed that way than it snowed and than it got worst the wind picked up to 20 mph.
By the time daylight hit the tent had blowed down twice try fixing that in the dark in the snow and wind and we had over 2 foot of snow
That is the one time I really thought my days were over

I hear you. They had to cut the hunt short a few times because of snow moving in. They said that if they don't beat the snow packing up and leaving, then they'd have to go back in the Spring to get what's left.

Best of luck!! You can't replace local knowledge. The camp I am in my buddy has been going to for 20 years (6 for me now) and his knowledge has resulted in me shooting 2 elk, a mulie and a bear in 5 years of actual hunting. We hunt 2nd season as well (although we are considering 3rd for next year) and our camp is at 9,600'. Make sure and drink more water than you think you need, listen to your body and if you get sick GET DOWN. I live at 6,500' and it is still and adjustment for me. We had a guy from Nebraska almost die a couple of years ago because he thought he could "tough it out". As for weather, as I am sure you know, be prepared for everything. In the same week I have seen temps from almost 70 down to -15. Hope you bring home a brute!!

Looks like we will be out at same time. Was intending to go elk otc but now I got to save some more $ to make it happen. Kinda neat to be able to hunt both.

I agree about the water, that trip I was going thru about 1.5 gallons per day, but it was almost hitting 90°F during the day, and we'd have frost in the morning. I plan on going out in August to do some scouting and shooting, and get there at least a few days early for the hunt to get acclimated to the altitude. 787' elevation here.......
