So I went to the DNR town hall this evening at Mounds State Park. (I wasn't able to stay for the whole thing) The following are some observations.
The first thing I noticed was a packed hall with about half the people wearing "save the bobcats" stickers. It was at this point I knew I was in for a treat.
During the time I was there I heard 0 voices that were pro anything proposed. The 2 most attacked topics were the mandatory euthanization of nuisance animals (Not dogs and cats). And the proposed bobcat season.
For the sake of saving you all a long read here are 3 takeaways from individuals I observed.
-One woman who was very against euthanization said that of we killed nuisance raccoons because of this what's to stop a teacher from killing a student who annoys them. This lady was drawing other crazy lines too.
-A child spoke and said why would we kill raccoons? Would you shoot a homeless man who was taking your trash?
-And my favorite. A woman claimed that opposums were not harmful at all and were just like cats. She then proceeded to say over the years she has lived with over 100 opposums. Some had played with her cats and some had even slept in her bed. This lady claimed she was a tax attorney to put the icing on the cake.
It was all in all better than cable!
(I apologize for spelling errors, I wrote this on my phone)

Forgot to mention, one gentleman claimed we don't need to hunt predators at all, they control their own populations.

That's all kind of sad really. I pity the DNR officials that are required to politely listen to this crap.
I was on DNR's site this morning, reading about their timber management at Yellowwood. That's another issue where they've been raked over the coals.
I find myself guilty of complaining and getting involved only when the DNR is proposing to do something that I don't agree with. I'm going to try to make it a point to submit positive comment more often when I feel the DNR is doing the right thing, otherwise all they'll hear from are the crazy cat-ladies.

No joke that individual needs a raise. I would of like to been there. Predators control themselves, I don't believe they do. I think the word they were looking for is natural selection. As for the opossums an the raccoons. Let one of them grab ahold of your leg with rabies. I'm sure after the shots they have to get, which I hear are equally painful as being bit by the crazed animal, they will change their outlook on the so called non-nuisance animals.

Yeah, but imagine all the fun they have afterwards saying "Wasn't that one lady half nuts"? When the DNR was proposing that certain turtles could not be taken form the wild a lady showed up that we promptly called "The Crazy Turtle Lady." She had dozens of box turtles that she had taken/rescued from the wild and they were her "babies" and she did not want to give them up. Very comical... I've had the rabies series of shots and they are not near as bad as they used to be when they gave you the shots in the abdomen. Expensive shots though.... .

Just get the addresses of the people who don't want the coons and possums killed so they can be turned loose in their yard.

This is just another example of what the DNR actually deal with everyday and why one person or like minded group doesn't necessarily get their way, even if it is the people buying licenses and providing the majority of the budget funding.

Just so credit goes to the right place the DNR does not actually hold these hearings. They are held by the Natural Resources Commission's Division of Hearings. And yes they have the patience of Job. www.in.gov/nrc/2467.htmJack
