Buddy and I are thinking about our first try at hog hunting. Not really excited about driving all the way to Texas. We're just after small edible ones not trophies. We will need a guide and lodging. If anyone has had any good experiences, were open to recommendations.

Buddy and I are thinking about our first try at hog hunting. Not really excited about driving all the way to Texas. We're just after small edible ones not trophies. We will need a guide and lodging. If anyone has had any good experiences, were open to recommendations. If you want to shoot them then you got 2 choices go public where you might do some good or might not. OR go to hunting ranch where you will see hogs but it will cost 300 or so to kill a hog. We got both those options here in Texas. Me personally I like to dog hunt. That can be set up too. Big boar hogs are not what I eat but a lot of people do. Sows if any size are great eating and Boars 150 down good too. Some people actually like to make sausage out of big boars. If I was going to drive a long way to hog hunt and it was going to be a once a year thing maybe I'd want to put some meat in the coolers. I'd suggest doing an all out thing. Sit in stands one day try to shoot a few. Go at night with a thermal try to shoot a few. Usually better opportunity with thermal than stand unless high fence. Take a day and do some dog hunting. Good opportunity to put a bunch in cooler. We caught 4 yesterday probably 600 pounds of hogs in 3 hrs. Main thing is to have a good time. Personally wouldn't want to drive a long distance to kill 1 or 2 100 pound hogs

Yup..thermal scopes on AR-223. Thermal camera & screen in his jacked up van. 2 of us went killed 3 & knocked down at least 3 more. It's a free for all when they come in to the peanut butter drums. He watches with a thermal handheld & waves you on when a group is on the peanut butter drums. You sneak up set up shooting sticks turn on your scope, 3 count if your with a buddy then unload.

The guy that runs hog swat was on CNN & took them on a hunt. It's was a news program about the use of ARs. You can find it online.

I've been here a few times. Don't know if it fits your price budget. Hunt over dogs (you can't turn down the hog though), spot and stalk or sit in a blind. The latter 2 you can pick and choose. Daniel is one of the owners, really down to earth. They have lodging, and a fully equipped kitchen, but you bring your food and cook for yourself or hit the local eateries. I'm more of a spot/stalk or blind type of guy, By the 2nd trip he said "You know the property, here's the keys. Take one of the trucks and call us if you shoot one. We'll field dress it and take it to the butcher." loshbough.com/

Those Tennessee hog hunts aren't real hog hunts. They are raised not wild, fenced in & have ear tags.

A real hog hunt is not guaranteed. That's right. But if the weather cooperates and you are hunting behind dogs there is a 90 plus percent success rate. I guarantee you.

If you just want to shoot them and you want to at least guarantee a shot on one. Then go high fence or thermal

Two buddies and I just got back from SE Alabama, we all got hogs. This was free range, baited sets hunting afternoons till a couple hours after dark. I held a flashlight beside my rifle (.222 Rem) to shoot mine, but a mounted light would be better. Once you turn on the light, be ready to shoot.
My buddies hogs showed up while they still had some shooting light, so flashlights were not needed.
It's a fun hunt and the meat is pretty darned good.
