I looked last week. It was really more of a trip to scout an area I found on the map (that went really well). Didnt find any sheds. I know theyre dropping down here, this matched set was found on an 80 acres private spot I got permission to hunt this past gun season, I never did hunt it. I have permission again this year so we will see so I might hunt this guy. Gonna have to see him to get a better idea of age. With those mass measurements around the bases.....if he is younger than 4.5 in 2018 I'd be absolutely astonished personally.

Hell with age looks good now He will be hard to pass, but im TRYING to stick to my goal of harvesting 4.5 or older. Dont particularly care if its a half rack measuring 50 inches as long as hits the age marker.

Whatever floats your boat. You would be self discipline role modle of the decade to let him walk if you decide it to be too young.

If he walks past me he will take a dirt nap and I will be off waterfowl hunting. Idc what his age is with a rack like that.

He would hit the ground if he was a 2 yr old and that size. You guys are soooo lucky and don't know what you got.

I'm aware how good we have it and if that deer steps in front of me I might change my mind. I find the most challenge and most enjoyment from harvesting mature deer. There is a part of me that does enjoy seeing a big rack, and that part of me is still disappointed that I took this 2.5 y/o in 2014 that had some serious potential. Im still very much proud of that deer and he put a very tasty 75# of meat in the freezer, but Im still wondering "what if". Back you your regularly scheduled thread.

I guess for me it has always been about the meat. When I was young and on my own we did not have much money so deer season was about stocking the freezer so we could eat high on the hog,so to speak. Now I have improved my job and not so much But i think the meat aspect had been engrained in me so much it is almost impossible for me.to let a leagle deer pass. I have always enjoyed hunting and enjoyed watching.deer when they were out of range. I just have never been able to go hunting.with the mindset to pass x deer just in case y deer would happen to come by today or next week. The deer you said was 2 years old I would have taken in a heart beat and never looked back. I hope your seasons are as enjoyable as mine as when i head for the woods my only wonder is if i will see deer and if one will give me a good shot. I am not disrespecting you. All i am saying is I can not understand how your hunting is enjoyable when you seem to worry about how old the deer is. Maby if we had the deer up here you have there I could understand. I have.noticed in some of the from the stand posts you all see.more bucks in one sit than I see all year. Hope this helps you understand my side wile I try to understand yours. Onebentarrow

Medic....you send his teeth in for analysis? This angle makes me even guessing age based on tooth wear impossible, but those base mass measurements while easily achievable by 2.5 year old given right health of habitat and environment, I've had some awesome 2.5 year olds but nothing with that mass and framework...curious if your age estimate is based on just body structure, tooth wear or age testing done by a lab? Heck of a buck...I also hear you on the "what if" thoughts...I still think that every time I look at a few of mine...and to a degree all of em except the estimated 9 year old one...

We didnt send the teeth off. Just our estimate based of tooth wear, body structure, and tarsal staining. The public ground I shot this buck at is known to hold some great genetics. We chased some great bucks there over the last few years.

I actually have some jawbones with teeth I'm getting ready to send out on various deer...they claim it is extremely accurate. Kinda fascinated by it all...a buddy of mine sent a tooth in on a deer we all assumed based on body, mass measurements and tooth wear was a 2.5 year old...came back 5.5...he didn't believe it so he sent another tooth to a different aging lab and they also said 5.5. Incredible.

Did a quick walk around the farm tonight, only about 45 minutes. No sheds but saw about 45 different deer.

We were out running dogs today. jimstc found one. Looked for the other side but couldn't find it. I'd say a matched set would've scored 10. About a 4 inch spike. I know I walked by it at least 5 times on that trail while running dogs and never seen it.

I walked the fence line at my parent's place today with the kids. No antlers, but found a roll of tape I didn't realize I'd lost and a glove.

I visited a friend in Tennessee this weekend. He was giving me a tour of his property in his UTV. We were going through a field and I spotted tines sticking up about 30 yards into the woods. I walked down and picked up a nice 4 point shed. A while later in the tour I spotted the match to it laying just inside a field edge. He offered to let me keep one of the sheds but I told him they needed to stay together and he should keep them both. Those will probably be the only sheds I find this year.

Seeing the up and comers dropping like flies that we knew from trail cams and encounters starts to get to me after a while. Everybody is free to do as they wish, I just don't want to know about it.

I pulled my trail cam today. It was there since Jan 4th. over 900 pictures, and just this morning I have pictures of a 10 pt, 8pt and some 4's and 6's that still have both sides of their antlers. A herd of 25 deer walked by that had the bucks bringing up the rear, and all but 2 had their noses to the ground.
Also on the trail cam were 2 dogs, a coyote, LOTS of Tom turkeys, and lately coon and a few possums.
Deer were browsing on wild raspberry/blackberry plants and leaves as they walked by.

Found couple sheds yesterday while out and about. Caught several bass out of the lake. Cleared some of the quad paths in the woods. Going to need the chains saw to finish. Ash trees are dropping like crazy.
