With this cold snowy winter the EHD should be minimal. I think the number will be higher and around 130K. Less taken this season means more deer next season. I also think the yotes numbers are going down with the education of the hunter about yotes. Not sure of the Bobcat influence on the deer herd number and the cycle of the rabbits effect on the yotes

I remember a few things from my college statistic's class. LOL very few things... But one formula/predictor that has always stuck in my head when projecting future numbers is. "Best indicator on future performance is past performance". So you want to project future harvests then look at past harvest's. I would be shocked to see a increase of more than 5-7 percent, just as I would be shocked to see a decrease of more than 5-7 percent. Barring a major change in season structure or extreme lowering of bonus tags or disease outbreak. I don't expect a big swing north or south.

Again though it really depends how big of an impact one feels the opener played....I mean it literally had nearly 20K less deer taken that day than every past firearm opener for years.... I think we all agree though...no matter what we all will be out there doing our best to lay the smack down on a biggun

In the end, I think what we'll find about this year's harvest numbers (when compared to last season) will be... Youth will likely remain steady to up a bit... Archery will be up. Muzzleloader will be up. Late antlerless will be up a bit. Firearms will be down, but when the numbers are looked at it will only be the opener (IMO due to the statewide weather event that day) that will be down. Days 2-15 will be up significantly, but not enough to offset being down 19,000 deer on the opener. So the final total will end up around 114,000 which will equate to about a 5% decline for this season as compared to 2016's numbers. What about next year? Barring a major shift in season dates and length, a huge Winter kill or major EHD outbreak, I think 2018 ends up between 120,000-125,000 deer. Anyone else want to offer a prediction? Barring the common circumstances that would make it less then the kill will be 120-125k? Not much of a limb there. If we are allowed a 5,000 deer cushion on our predictions I will say 117,500 - 122,500.

Swik
I don't see a need to crawl out on a limb...LOL. This is where the numbers have been, and where I think they will likely be for the next few years.

This year was but a blip. An anomaly. A freak. An unfriendly certain coupled with a disastrous uncertain.
The latest start date our state has coupled with the worst weather I can imagine. I wont speculate on how much it mattered or where we would have been had it not been for ..... all I know is it mattered.

Current reported deer harvest: 113,558 From Sept 15, 2017 to Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 6:15 AM CST That is 237 deer registered since yesterday. Left overs from the "Special Antlerless Season" and/or some "Deer Reduction Zone" kills? Who knows? Deer harvest numbers are updated as deer are checked in via CheckIN Game. All numbers are raw data that have not been verified by the Indiana DNR. www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/8367.htmThey must have had a glitch.. Now they say - 113478

Not only do we have a declining deer herd we now have deer that have been killed crawling out of the freezers and getting uncounted. Just kidding.. I asked Joe Caudell about the numbers and he said... We are at about 5.1% decrease from last year...

Current reported deer harvest: 113,460 From Sept 15, 2017 to Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 6:45 am CST The numbers got down to 113,458 and came back up to the present number. I'm guessing that the DNR has got the dups done and now a few Deer Reduction Zone deer are dribbling in.. But as Joe Caudell said - Nothing is final until its final. The harvest number is back to 113,478...
Its a bouncing ball keeping up with it..
I'll let it ride until the seasons are over...they are subject to change even after that...
