I have 5 acre's of drilled soybeans that deer have just destroyed. Basically just about 12" stems with bean pods left. Since they still have bean pods I really don't want to till under but was thinking about broadcasting a mix of forage oat's , wheat and turnips into the bean's. Just wondered what kind of stand I could expect. Probably wait to seed until just before a good rain. Anyone tried or had success or failure trying this? ? Want to get done within next week or so if I decide to do.

Shouldn't be a problem. They fly on turnips, radishes, and rye around here for some guys that do cover crops and always seems to come up good.

News is saying it is supposed to rain good down your way. Prolly wouldn't be a bad idea if you can get it done today. If I seen this sooner I would have replied sooner

With Harvey's rain then couple days dry weather I'm planning on seeding on Monday with rain forecasted for Tuesday again. Going to use 3.pt cyclone seeding that I have for tractor. Going with 100 lbs forage oats, 50 lbs wheat and 6 lbs purple top turnips.

150lbs cereal grains over the entire 5 acres?
I'd have went heavier. Beans are all but done pod producing so I'd go full bushel per acre broadcasted next year + turnips or whatever brassicas you want to mix in.
If you have turkeys at all, some of the cereal grains will hit their bellies before germ LOL
Overseeding beans is a must for anyone with beans, great way to up the tonnage provided. Keep us updated with your results.
Oh, one tip, only overseed mid to late day on a sunny day because if leaves have moisture the seeds will stick to them.

Deer have eaten all the leaves that's why am over seeding. Nothing but stems and bean pods

I just did some oats, wheat, brassicas (no idea what biologic put in them) and clover. To fill in where deer destroyed my beans. Everything I can find says 100# per acre for forage oats. Hoping for rain tomorrow and next day.

Kinda procrastinated on getting the bean's over seeded so game plan has changed slightly. I did till up about 1/2 acre or so 3 weeks ago and planted to turnips, beat's and radish mix which has done really well. Plan now is to till up another 2 acres and seed to forage oat's, wheat and turnip mixture this weekend. (Bought 100lbs wheat seed, 50 lbs forage oats and 5 lbs turnips.) That will leave about 3 acres of whats left of soybeans, I also have 2.5 acres of alfalfa and 1 acre of imperial whitetail clover in the same field already so should have a good variety of food to choose from this fall/winter.

Field done. Wheat, oats and turnips should be ready for late season. Have 8 acre sanctuary surrounded by 2 acres clover, 1 acre radish, beats, turnips, 2 acres alfalfa, 2.5 acre soybeans and now 2 acres wheat, forage oats and turnips. And couple acres standing corn..... Gonna be fun.

Side benefit to seeding the new field is I observed a covey of quail out in the field getting their bellies full. LOL. 12 birds (4 adults and 8 youngster's) This is one of 3 covey's I now have. Converted some hilly hay ground over to wildlife areas 3 years ago by letting grow up and planting cedar's tree's. Small game is really using those areas.

The oats, wheat and turnips are doing great. Probably 5" tall. Deer already hitting and should provide a food source all winter.
