Put 2 more down for team #1 LCB. Brings my personal total up to 13. My son went with me. He killed a gray, but it lodged up in the tree. He shot at another later, thinking it was a small gray, but it turned out to be a piney! Technically, it is a squirrel.....does it count for the contest?

Please add the 5 squirrels (all males) I bagged this morning to Team Squirrel Squad’s total. All of them were (or recently had been) feasting on a tall, straight shagbark hickory. I used a 128 year-old 12 gauge side by side with 30-inch barrels. The gun was a Remington Model 1889 made in 1889. Patterns were about full and full. I had recently reloaded some low-pressure loads in old Winchester AA hulls with an ounce and an eighth of #5 shot (more like #4 ½ shot). This amounted to 170 pellets. These pellets hit pretty hard, even though the muzzle velocity was only around 1040 ft/sec. FYI, see page 112 of the September 2017 issue of the American Rifleman for a nice picture and description of a Model 1889 shotgun. This is certainly not my ideal shotgun for squirrels, but I felt good giving it one more day in the woods. It did not let me down.

4 for Team 4 this morning. It was pretty tough as there was plenty of wind today! Took two from a Beech and two from a Shagbark Hickory. All grays again. Haven't even seen a fox squirrel so far this season.
Edit:
Forgot to mention that the Marlin 17 HM2 got to join me on that walk. That is one fine squirrel round! Laser accuracy and damage equivalent to a .22 HP.
Personal squirrel count is 9.

That gun should be chambered in 2 7/16 if I recall correctly. I shoot an old Stevens with the short chamber. It is not recommended unless you are shooting paper shells I understand but I shoot low brass field loads without a problem. It will out kick anything out there when you shrink the barrel diameter with the cone of plastic but it's an extremely tight group. Wade Before I shoot an old shotgun that could possibly be chambered for shorter than the current standard 2-3/4 inches I always check the chamber. My 1889 currently has a standard chamber of 2-3/4 inches, whether it was originally that way or someone later lengthened the chamber to the modern standard length. Thanks for bringing up the point. We all want to fire safe ammunition in our guns, especially those very old ones without the chamber size marked on the barrels or elsewhere on the gun.

Score 2 more for team #1 LCB. Brings my personal total up to 15. Beautiful, but chilly day in the woods. Saw 4, shot at 3 and nailed 2.
