We have been planting red and white pines the last three weekends. Trees came from the DNR and look great. 1900 planted so far. We also bought 200 persimmon that are 3 years old and are about 36" tall. If you want to plant trees you should check out the DNR tree ordering program. Great quality trees with a great price. I bought 2500 trees for $625.

Good job ! Glad to see people planting trees. I've not had much trouble with deer working over the White Pines, but they sure were hard on the White Cedars.
I've planted about 40,000 so far. You just have to accept that you are going to lose a percentage of them. Too much work and too expensive to tube and protect everything. Easier to just plant more.

I planted 300 white and red pines 3 years ago that I got from State nursery in Valonia . IF YOU DONT PROTECT WITH FENCE OR TUBES DEER WILL EAT OR RUB THEM TO DEATH. I've lost 30-50 of the 300 I'd guess. Bucks figured out that they could tear cages off with rack. Watched one buck last fall tear off 3 cages and eat the trees....

I live in Switzerland County and I can testify from experience that deer love to eat the red and white pine seedlings. Please protect them or you are doing lots of work for nothing. Maybe by planting so many you will have several survive??? How are you planting??? Roots systems I got were pretty long so we had to use post hole auger to dig holes to plant so as not to J root the root system.

A friend of mine planted a mix of pine and hardwoods years ago and the forester told him most of the pines wouldn't make it if the deer messed with them. He now has a huge stand of mature pines and no hardwoods. Hard to figure.

AS much rain as we've got, it would be a good idea to look at your persimmon seedlings for black fungus on the leaves.
I've been spraying with captan and seems to fix it up.
