Several years ago I machine planted a +/- 8 acre grove of oaks on the farm. Now that they have grown to 4"-8" stump diameter, it's obvious they were planted too close together. Have been cutting every other one to give them some room. The resulting brush laying on the ground should make good rabbit cover and bedding for the deer too.
Seems kind of sinful to cut and kill all those nice young oaks, but I think the remaining ones will do much better. Another afternoon or two should wrap up this project.

Being that close together, they should have self pruned themselves, now opening up the canopy you might have to do a bit of pruning in the upcoming years.
I spent 3 days at a friends place last week basal spraying a bunch of unwanted saplings on his 40 acres, and we only scratched the surface in a few areas. He is supposed to have some areas burned this Spring, and that will help those areas immensely. There are areas where a deer can't walk due to the tops, brush and thorny stuff growing. I was amazed at how little the state is charging him to burn. $28/acre.

I would have hinged them, they'll live for a time (could be a year or could be a dozen years) and provide food and cover to the wildlife. Deer LOVE oak shoots and buds but are typically not at their level.

I don't know who here in Indiana, but I would start with your counties NRCS office. This was in Arkansas where the property is located.

Deer LOVE oak shoots and buds but are typically not at their level. I did hinge quite a few of them. Have been hinging quite a bit of other area as well. Regarding controlled burns, I have hired a company named JF NEW in northern Indiana to burn for me on a couple occasions. Many private foresters also offer this service. Have also done quite a bit myself.
