I edited my original post to remove the bad photo links and add a new photo. It now sports a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10X44 scope. Using 56 grains of IMR 4198 and a 200-grain .40 SST in a light blue Harvester sabot, it's running around 2400 FPS.

This year I switched back to the light blue Harvestor sabots and the 195g Barnes. Too much damage with the Pittman Aeromax bullets. I still have to chrono the load and I will post the FPS.

I tried to remove the breech plug from my H.I.S. sml. I cannot get it loose. I tried a small impact driver and every wrench I could think of. I got a good fit with a socket so that was not a problem. Is it necessary to remove it to clean the barrel?

Well, technically no, but I would get the breech plug out because the longer it's in there the harder it will be to get it out. Put a fired primer in there to seal the breech and try soaking it with Kroil with the butt on the floor. Make sure that nothing is seeping past the primer to get into the stock.

Is it necessary to remove it to clean the barrel? My advice is "get it to a gunsmith, ASAP". If he can get it out or drills it out and replaces with a new one, do yourself a favor and remove and clean that plug every time you come in from firing even 1 shot. Just because you are shooting "smokeless" doesn't mean you can ignore basic maintenance. After all... it's a muzzleloader! FWIW. Good luck. BOB

What we do with the Savage ML breechplug is coat it with copper anti-seize, then give it a wrap with teflon tape. Even do that with the vent liner.
If you can't get it out, send it back to Hankins and have them fix it.

If the new reg proposal of eliminating caliber restrictions goes through, I might just have to have a smokeless .45 barrel made for my Encore pistol!

Haven't tried it with the Scouts I had converted. Not sure how easy it is for the wad to start straight with that muzzle brake on there.

A .358 or .308 might make for a really nice smokeless!!

I'm putting a brake on my .45 cal one this year and will go back to shooting bore riders. Pittman Bullets.
