Couple of years ago I sprayed/tilled/planted roughly 8 acres for a WSG field. Then the drought hit and it really didn't germinate. The 3rd year after planting, there is some Big Bluesten, Little Bluestem, and some Cave-in-Rock coming up now, but there is also a sizable patch of Sumac and blackberries starting to grow (maroon stems, 18" tall or so).
What's the best route to get the field back on track? Soil has a very high sand content, pH is 7.0 (tested and limed last year and 2 years prior), Fertilizer levels are OK for grass according to the lab.

My fields I welcome both But if you don't want them Fire will set them back then Spot spray the patches you don't want to me Fescue is the problem I've head Rob Chapman many times say you should be able to throw a baseball from one shrub or forb patch to the next I my self would keep sumac

Best thing for those grasses is a good burn off in the spring. It does wonders.

I agree I kinda like the sound of what the OP is describing. One could spot fire chunks of the grasses to really let the bigger more desirable grasses (Switch, Blustem) and such kick off more in those spots.
